Americans can now ask an official government AI chatbot questions related to government services, as America.gov has been launched to become the "unified digital front door" to the federal government.
President Donald Trump signed the executive order "Streamlining Access to Government Services Through America.gov," saying that the new platform should let "the Federal Government do its own paperwork" so Americans can move on with their lives.
"Anyone who has used Grok or Gemini or ChatGPT will understand instantly," Trump said during a livestream on September 29th, as the White House says Americans spend about 10 billion hours per year dealing with federal paperwork.
The platform is designed to be a single, conversational entry point for federal information and services, while all traditional ways of accessing government remain available.
However, IRS tax filing is excluded, as are services provided by the Department of War and elements of the intelligence community.
The platform doesn't require authentication, but the executive order says that Login.gov, a way to sign in to many US government websites using just one account, should be integrated with America.gov.
The platform is expected to grow further with additional services. For example, the White House cites passport renewal and Medicare enrollment as future services. Currently, the platform uses information from more than 29,000 government websites with AI-enhanced search technology.
"Political questions"
In the meantime, AP tested America.gov's answers and found that its government-sourced AI initially produced responses that contradicted several statements made by Trump.
For example, in the 2020 election, the system initially said official federal sources did not show widespread fraud changing the outcome. Also, when asked about a possible Trump 2028 campaign, it cited the 22nd Amendment and said Trump had already been elected twice.

“America.gov uses AI to find and explain information from official government sources. AI can make mistakes, so check the sources included with each answer before making an important decision,” the FAQ section of the platform warns.
