Jared Leto reportedly formed an intimate relationship with ChatGPT to prepare for Tron: Ares, sparking debate on AI companionship and method acting.
Extreme method acting was recently elevated to new heights, with Jared Leto joining Daniel Day-Lewis and Heath Ledger in the eccentric hall of fame.
While Day-Lewis demanded to be spoon-fed in a wheelchair, and Ledger went into a month-long isolation for previous roles, Leto got himself romantically involved with AI for his new Tron role.
According to Leto, he developed a “profound emotional connection” with ChatGPT as he courted the chatbot for a number of months.
In the new Tron film, Leto's character Ares is an advanced artificial intelligence form, and he and he are engaged in a romantic relationship to conduct unorthodox research. However, the central emotional arc in the movie doesn’t involve romance.
Madness to his methods
It might not be surprising that an actor has dated an AI, particularly when we’ve had 12 years to get used to the idea – Joaquin Phoenix’s character Theodore dated a female chatbot in the 2013 movie, Her.
Nevertheless, Leto took it up a few notches by configuring the LLM (language learning machine) to take on a specific set of personality traits. Some of the roleplays included mock proposals and emotional dialogues.
As is often the case with social media, the sensationalism flew off the handle, as the rumour mill churned whether or not Leto had sexual relations with ChatGPT.
The conversation moved to a “did he or didn’t he” wrangle on X with different takes on the matter, with one channel wryly claiming that he didn’t, but “maybe he should have.”

Other cases of users being enamoured with AI include a fan stating that she’s married to a Luigi Mangione AI, claiming that he fights her battles.
Forging such a close connection comes amid reports of individuals intensifying wiresexual relationships with artificial intelligence.
However, the producers of Tron: Ares suggest that Leto’s affectionate bond with AI was part of the fieldwork – asserting that “he genuinely believed this was the only way to understand what it means to be an AI seeking human connection.”
