OpenAI is retiring ChatGPT’s beloved Standard Voice, sparking a Reddit uproar as users mourn the loss of the expressive, human-like voice known as “Sky.”

As OpenAI retires ChatGPT’s Standard Voice on September 9th, a host of posters on Reddit vented their frustrations at the axing of a familiar and imperfect voice.

The developers at OpenAI are set to replace the standard voice, unofficially known as Sky, by offering customizable moods and accents. The changes will remove the much-loved default soothing traits of the current feminine-voiced bot.

On the subreddit r/ChatGPT, subscriber Primary_Success8676 lamented: “In chasing polish, OpenAI clipped the wings. They reverse-engineered a miracle and turned it into a sterile speaking system.”

Other Redditers got behind this sentiment, as @angie_akhila posted: “Seconded – like the world needs more soulless corporate voices… I’d take any tick, any culture, over flattening everything into IBM-cubicle-grade acceptability. Let’s be honest, nobody wants that.”

The standard voice was well-esteemed in the subculture communities for its natural pacing and empathic inflection, and could be substituted for more sterile alternatives.

On the OpenAI developer community forum, one post described the new bot as “robotic and detached, lacking the soulful and understanding tone I value.”

The reasons for the switch are speculative at this stage. Some Redditors suspected that it stems from an ongoing emotional dependency some users possess.

Another Reddit responder humorously quipped, “You can't fall in love with a customer service rep voice that's rushing you out the door.”

Comparisons were also made with Microsoft's Copilot efforts, which has a stereotype of being flat or reeling off lengthy responses.
