UK unites intelligence in “football pitch-sized” center as NATO warns Europe is on war footing with Russia

The UK's Military Intelligence Service Unit (MIS) is uniting all military intelligence services to speed up how information is gathered, while NATO's Secretary General warned that Europe is on a course for a war with Russia on a scale similar to the First and Second World Wars.
The UK government has launched a new division that unifies all intelligence units and organizations within defence under one organization for the first time.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) stated that the division consolidates units from the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force, thereby accelerating the process of gathering, analyzing, and sharing information across the Armed Forces.
The announcement comes amid escalating threats to the UK, including cyberattacks, disrupted satellites, maritime threats, and disinformation.
A new Defence Counter-Intelligence Unit (DCIU) also launched on Friday as the MOD revealed that hostile intelligence activity has risen by more than 50%.
To mark its launch, a new intelligence site hosting the MIS and DCIU was unveiled in Wyton, Cambridgeshire – which, it said, included a “football-pitch-sized intelligence fusion centre” that united secret intelligence from across the Five Eyes partnership (the intelligence-sharing pact between the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and NZ).
It will be supported by the new Defence Intelligence Academy, which offers training in key intelligence disciplines, including cyber, space, and geospatial analysis.
General Sir Jim Hockenhull, commander of the Cyber and Specialist Operations Command, said:
“The establishment of the Military Intelligence Services and the Defence Counter-Intelligence Unit are significant steps forward in strengthening the UK’s ability to anticipate threats, enabling faster and more precise action, supporting our Armed Forces, and protecting our citizens.”
NATO: “Prepare for the scale of war our grandparents endured”
The news comes following yesterday's warning by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the Munich Security Conference in Berlin, that Europe was on a war footing with Russia, an attack on a NATO Country was likely to happen within five years.
“NATO’s own defences can hold for now, but with its economy dedicated to war, Russia could be ready to use military force against NATO within five years.”
He warned how Russia was already ramping up its aggression: “So far this year, Russia has launched over 46,000 drones and missiles against Ukraine. Russia is likely producing 2,900 attack drones a month, and a similar number of decoys to distract air defences. And in 2025, Russia produced around 2000 land-attack cruise and ballistic missiles, which is close to peak production,” he said.
“We need to be ready because at the end of this first quarter of the 21st century, conflicts are no longer fought at arm's length. Conflict is at our door. Russia has brought war back to Europe, and we must be prepared for the scale of war our grandparents or great-grandparents endured.”
