Upcoming “28 Years Later” movie reportedly filmed on iPhone 15 Pro Max

Danny Boyle’s new zombie blockbuster “28 Years Later” was filmed using iPhones – and not even the latest models, WIRED says. If so, it’s the biggest movie ever shot with smartphones.

According to the news outlet, adapted iPhone 15s were used whilst making the Hollywood thriller, slated for release in June 2025. It’s a long-awaited follow-up to 28 Days Later (2002) and its 2007 sequel, 28 Weeks Later.

Until now, the production has kept under wraps the fact that the movie was shot with smartphones. The staff were reportedly asked to sign non-disclosure agreements preventing the fact from emerging.

However, a clue has been found online. A paparazzi photo, shot in July, shows the actor Jodie Comer standing close to a movie camera – at first glance, the latter seems standard but is in fact connected to a protected cage holding something that could be an iPhone.

When WIRED began asking questions, several people connected to the upcoming movie confirmed that the particular model used to shoot was the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The original movie 28 Days Later was also unique for 2002 as it was filmed with an innovative digital camera, the Canon XL-1. The budget for the new film is $75 million, so it’s the biggest one to date filmed with smartphones.

WIRED also reports that in addition to using the iPhone 15 Pro Max as the principal camera, some scenes in 28 Years Later were shot with action cams strapped to farm animals. The news outlet accurately names them as “GoatPros.”
