New on streaming: Dexter alive again, and it’s still sunny in Philadelphia

The gang of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is returning for the sitcom’s 17th season. It’s great. What’s not, however, is that Dexter is once again being brought back from the dead. It is what it is.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 (Hulu)

The beloved series returns with the second part of the Abbott Elementary crossover, which, of course, sees our heroes volunteering (rather badly) at the school. In short, the new season looks as eventful as ever.

The key to the show’s success is probably the fact that The Gang is just like us, the regular folk. They might seem like degenerates who are always scheming something, but at least they’re human-like.

Dexter: Resurrection (Paramount Plus)

At first, Dexter Morgan faked his death in a hurricane. Now, he has miraculously recovered from his near-fatal gunshot wound.

He can’t die (or stay dead), obviously, because Dexter’s franchise is expanding. There’s already been the original show’s prequel series Dexter: Original Sin, for example. Now, Dexter: Resurrection is premiering.

Unfortunately, the rumor is that the writing has remained mediocre. At least this time, Michael C. Hall is joined by a stacked cast, including Uma Thurman and Peter Dinklage.

Too Much (Netflix)

The show sees a workaholic leave New York behind as she relocates to London. She’s named Jessica rather than Emily, and it’s London, not Paris – but the vibes are similar.

In fact, the critics say Too Much might even be better: less cheesy and messier. Plus, in its own way, the 10-part series explores the funny side of the special UK-US relationship. Whereas Emily in Paris is unashamedly silly, the new show might be unashamedly smart.

Ballard Season 1 (Prime Video)

Ballard is a new police procedural series and a spinoff of the Bosch universe. It stars Maggie Q as Detective Renee Ballard, who leads the LAPD’s cold case division.

Typically for the Bosch franchise, the series loyally follows the narratives laid out in Michael Connelly’s novels.

Ballard leads the LAPD’s new and underfunded cold case division, tackling the city’s most challenging long-forgotten crimes with empathy and relentless determination.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the new series can reach the heights of Unforgotten, a brilliant British series.

The Institute (MGM Plus)

Whatever Stephen King does, it’s not for kids. Don’t let them get close to your screen when you begin watching this adaptation of the great writer’s 2019 book.

Yep, it’s a horror show where kids are snatched from their beds and locked in a facility where psychic powers mean torture in the name of science. It’s like Stranger Things, but much scarier.
