Now you can emojify your friends' Spotify playlists

Spotify has introduced a new feature called “Track reactions,” whereby you can add one of six emojis in response to your friends’ choice of tracks.

Key takeaways:

In a bid to become more interactive, the music streaming giant has offered users the options of a heart, a laughing face, a thumbs-up, headphones, fire, and an emotional face.

The feature will allow a collaborative network of up to 10 people to send track reactions as the service rolls out globally over the coming weeks.

On top of that, the curator of a playlist will be able to manually activate or deactivate the rolling reactions, as well as the notifications that come with them.

The service is available to both premium and free users.

The platform was becoming stale

Spotify has been increasingly under the spotlight in recent months, especially regarding collective listening habits and the platform's reliance on artificial intelligence.

In particular, research published in May showed that listeners' algorithmic streaming habits are becoming more uniform and less individualistic, with many of the songs at the top of the charts sounding similar.

On top of that, in February, the co-CEO of the company, Gustav Söderström, revealed that the company's software hadn’t written any code since Christmas the previous year, highlighting its reliance on AI software.

Further to that, the platform faced backlash from fans, who realized that the viral band The Velvet Sundown had its music produced by AI.

Spotify attempted to give listeners back some control in December, when it introduced a new feature that lets listeners describe exactly how they want a playlist curated.

The introduction of emojis could well support the platform in sustaining its incremental ascent, as it added 10 million new users in the first quarter of 2026.
