Amazon discontinues support for older Kindle models, sparks outcry

Amazon will no longer support Kindle and Kindle Fire e-readers that were released before 2013.

The changes will take place on May 20th, 2026. Not all is lost, however, as users will still be able to use their devices with limitations.

Owners of older Kindle models were notified of the changes via an email from Amazon.

The company said that users of Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 or earlier won’t be able to buy, download, or borrow books through the Kindle Store, according to PCMag.

These are the Kindle readers with support coming to an end:

  • Kindle: Kindle 1st Generation (2007)
  • Kindle DX and DX Graphite(2009 and 2010)
  • Kindle Keyboard (2010)
  • Kindle 4 (2011)
  • Kindle Touch (2011)
  • Kindle 5 (2012)
  • Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation(2012)
  • Kindle Fire Tablets: Kindle Fire 1st Gen (2011)
  • Kindle Fire 2nd Gen (2012)
  • Kindle Fire HD 7 (2012)
  • Kindle Fire HD 8.9 (2012)

One netizen in Australia shared the news on Reddit, asking what could be done so they could keep using the device, as it still works fine.

“Does anyone have any idea on how to avoid this? Can it even be avoided?” asked the user, adding: “My Kindle works well still, and it’s so disappointing it’ll be reduced to a useless brick soon. I won’t be buying one ever, now I know Amazon can do things like this.”

While users will no longer be able to use the Kindle Store, they will still be able to read the books they already have or upload new ones manually.

The company also noted that its apps and Amazon services on Kindle Fire tablets won’t be affected by the change.

According to Amazon, the reason for ending support for these devices is that they simply become too old, with the company providing support for 14 to 18 years.
