Is Amazon’s AI-powered Kindle Scribe Colorsoft worth $630?

Amazon has unveiled its latest devices in the Kindle Scribe range. One specific model stands out for its range of new features and a hefty price tag.
Amazon appears to be transitioning its Kindle e-readers from simple reading devices to fully-fledged productivity tools powered by AI.
One of the newest devices unveiled at the Amazon devices event is the first of its kind, Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, which looks and sounds flashy.
However, the price tag leaves more to be desired, as it may take some convincing from loyal Kindle users to swap their $400 Kindle for a slightly different version that’s $630.
Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, along with the other iterations in the Kindle Scribe line, has been described by Amazon as being “ultra thin” at 5.4mm and weighing only 400 grams.
Amazon boasts that its new devices are also 40% faster when it comes to writing and turning pages, despite the sleeker and lighter design.
The newest Kindle Scribe collection also has the largest screen with an 11-inch display that “mirrors the proportions of a piece of paper.”
Specifically, the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft features a “fluid colour writing experience,” which essentially allows the user to work in colours that are soft and not hard on the eyes, Amazon’s US website claims.
Along with a bunch of bells and whistles like its Colorsoft display technology, which claims to “enhance colour without washing out the details,” Amazon’s newest device is AI-powered.
While Amazon claims that its new offerings use “redesigned software and tools that help you be more productive,” could the big tech company simply be slapping AI onto its products to hike up the price?
Some of the new features include Quick notes, which let users easily jot down notes, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive support, and AI-powered search.
The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft also lets users export their notes using OneNote, which can be exported to a different device.
All of the devices come with a pen that “feels amazing in your hands,” Amazon claims.
Should you spend $630 on Amazon’s Kindle Scribe Colorsoft?
It seems difficult to justify the $630 price tag, as Amazon’s latest line of devices is arguably a fit for a niche group of users, like students and creatives, who need the functionality of an Apple iPad or an Android tablet without the in-app distractions.
When tested by Bloomberg, the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft presented the journalist with a few notable issues.
These included minor scratches on the screen after a weekend of use and an unexpectedly fast battery drain, despite Amazon stating that its devices provide a week's worth of battery life.
Furthermore, the journalist who tested the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft said they needed to replace the pen tips more quickly than expected and were unable to use Amazon’s AI to synthesize larger amounts of handwritten notes.
Bloomberg also noted that the device’s interface wasn’t particularly intuitive, as the journalist struggled to navigate certain features, such as the Notebooks area.
However, there are some compelling aspects of the device that may appeal to students and professionals.
For example, the ability to use various cloud storage services and document integration may make it easier for students and professionals to access and organize their documents and workspaces.
Overall, it seems that the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, despite all the new features, may only appeal to a small group of users.
If you read a hell of a lot for work or school and also prefer taking notes digitally, then the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft might be for you.
Otherwise, it might not be worth the $630 splurge.
