Apple keeps old music alive with new app

In with the new, but not out with the old – the tech giant’s Apple Music Classical app will allow fans of Beethoven, Mozart, and the like to enjoy five million tracks by celebrated composers at the touch of their devices.

And those who are new to classical music might want to try out the Editor’s Choice, billed by Apple as its curated selection of gold-standard pieces. Featuring more than 700 playlists spanning eight centuries of music, the app promises a comprehensive experience for fans of the longstanding genre.

“Classical works have multiple movements and tracks,” said the company in a press release giving an overview of its new app. “Famous pieces have hundreds of recordings with different orchestras, conductors, and soloists, and many composers have their own special catalogue classifications.”

It added: “With these complexities in mind, Apple Music Classical has redesigned search to instantly deliver exactly what users are looking for using all combinations of keywords, from composer and work, to opus number, conductor, artist, or instrument, and even a work’s nickname.”

Using the app to search for a work “reveals all its recordings, plus an Editor’s Choice performance,” while “searching for a composer displays all available works.”

Brand-new artwork of composers has also been specially commissioned to add an extra splash of color to the app, with Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and Tchaikovsky among others.

“Commissioned from a diverse group of artists, each image blends historical research with color palettes and artistic references from the relevant classical period,” said Apple.

Story of Classical audio guides are also provided, for those who wish to brush up on their musicology and learn more about the history of the genre.

Apple Music Classical is available for download from the App Store wherever it offers Apple Music, excluding China, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Taiwan, and Turkey.
