Louder and easier to locate: Apple releases new AirTag

After five years, Apple has finally upgraded its controversial device, the AirTag.

Apple has just launched its updated version of AirTag, which was first released in 2021.

The next-generation tracking device is available for $30 for a single tracker or $100 for a pack of four, with the company noting that it maintains the same pricing as the previous-generation AirTag.

Regarding the device's specifications, which was created to help users keep tabs on their things through the Find My app, it’s powered by an Ultra Wideband chip also used in other Apple products such as the Apple Watch Ultra 3, iPhone 17, and iPhone Air.

This enhancement allows the device to more easily locate the item, while an upgraded Bluetooth chip extends the range at which it can be located.

According to the company, using AirTag’s haptic, visual, and audio signals, users can find their items “from up to 50 percent farther away” than with the previous-generation AirTag.

Owners of Apple Watch Series 9 or later, as well as Watch Series Ultra 2 or later, can now also use their devices to find their AirTag.

The new AirTag is also 50% louder than the previous device, allowing users to hear it from up to twice as far away, claims Apple.

The AirTag works by showing the item’s location through Apple’s Find My Network. If the AirTag is out of range of its paired device, Find My Network, which uses Bluetooth to locate devices, can show the owner the approximate location of their item.

The new AirTag also works with previously released Share Item Location, Apple’s software feature, which helps users find lost items faster by temporarily and securely sharing the location of their item with third parties, such as airlines, to help them find misplaced items.

The company also notes that “AirTag is designed exclusively for tracking objects and offers industry-leading protections against unwanted tracking.”

This comes after Apple’s tracking device has been involved in stalking cases. Since then, Apple has designed the device to send notifications every time an unrecognized device is nearby.

Apple notes that its new AirTag doesn’t store location data or the device’s history. Communication via the Find My network is also end-to-end encrypted, with only the device's owner able to access its location data.
