The error led to the company’s CEO's resignation.
An error by a Norwegian gambling company made thousands of Norwegians think that they had won huge sums of money.
Norsk Tipping, a gambling operator in Norway, stated that several thousand customers were notified of "incorrectly high prizes.”
This misunderstanding even caused the company’s chief executive, Tonje Sagstuen, to step down from her role.
It’s been reported that the company receives the prize money from Germany in euros, which are later converted into Norwegian currency – kroner.
The error that caused the confusion happened during the currency conversion, when an error was made in the game engine code. It caused the amount to be multiplied by 100 when it should’ve been divided by 100, reports the Guardian.
The incorrect sums were then shown on the company’s website and mobile app until it was removed.
Norsk Tipping said that the company hasn't made any payouts with incorrect sums.
This situation received backlash from customers as well as regulators and the Norwegian Minister of Culture, with whom the company had an emergency meeting.
Two days after the initial error, the company’s CEO revealed that she was leaving. She had been in the role for almost two years.
It’s not the first time the company has found itself in an awkward situation, with Norsk Tipping experiencing other technical issues in the past year.
