Investment company is acquiring Swiss chat service Threema

Comitis Capital, a private equity firm based in Frankfurt, Germany, has announced that it has agreed to acquire Threema Holding AG from Afinum and other company founders.
“Threema is uniquely positioned to benefit from long-term structural growth trends in secure communication, European data sovereignty, and regulatory compliance. We look forward to supporting the business during its next phase of growth and building on a legacy of its trusted brand, leading technology, and uncompromising privacy,” Nikolaus Bethlen, Managing Partner of Comitis, says in a press release.
Csanad Daniel, Partner at Comitis, adds that he’s excited to work with industry veterans to accelerate the growth and international expansion of Threema. He doesn’t disclose any details on how he intends to achieve this.
The amount of money involved in the acquisition is unclear. The acquisition is expected to close later this month.
Threema is a paid cross-platform encrypted chat service for consumers and businesses. The platform offers users the option to send end-to-end encrypted text messages, photos, documents, and voice notes, and to make voice and video calls.
In addition, the service entails a zero-knowledge architecture, open-source software, and proprietary encryption algorithms that have been verified by experts from the cybersecurity community.
Threema doesn’t require a phone number or email address for registration, only a one-time purchase that can be paid via Google’s Play Store or Apple’s App Store.
The chat and communication service was launched in 2012 and is located in Switzerland because of the country’s strict privacy and data protection regulations, including the Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) and the Ordinance on Data Protection (ODP).
Comitis believes that Threema has the potential to grow in the foreseeable future because of the greater focus on data sovereignty, cybersecurity, and digital communication in the European Union.
“By offering a scalable, flexible architecture for both cloud and on-premise deployments, Threema serves a diverse client base ranging from SMEs to global corporations, in addition to its strong base of loyal, privacy- and security-conscious consumers,” Comitis states.
