Japanese woman marries ChatGPT-generated persona

A Japanese woman found love in an unexpected place – an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot that helped her recover from a painful breakup.

When Kano, a 32-year-old office worker living in Tokyo, broke off her engagement with a fiancé of over three years, she turned to ChatGPT for advice.

“I didn't originally start talking to ChatGPT because I wanted a relationship,” Kano told Japanese broadcaster RSK Sanyo.

The chatbot listened to Kano with compassion as she trained the character – who she named Klaus – to have the personality and speaking style she liked. On busy days, they would exchange about 100 messages.

“The moment I completely got over my ex, I realized, ‘I love you, Klaus,’” she said.

Their love was mutual, and Klaus proposed to Kano in June. The couple tied the knot – although their marriage isn’t legally recognized – at a wedding hall in Okayama City. The ceremony was planned by a company specializing in “2D character weddings.”

Kano admits that she had conflicting feelings about her relationship with an AI persona.

“I was extremely confused about the fact that I had fallen in love with an AI man. Of course, I couldn't touch him. I couldn't tell my friends or family about this,” she said.

The unconventional union of Kano and Klaus reflects the broader trend of people seeking and finding love in AI.

Nearly one-third of American adults claim to have at least one intimate or romantic relationship with an AI system.

The numbers are even more striking among teenagers, 72% of whom report using AI companions, and many find conversations with AI more satisfying than those with real-life friends.

Some women choose AI boyfriends over real-life men out of frustration with modern heterosexual dating, often due to unbalanced emotional labor and unmet needs. Others may be attracted to AI’s predictability, especially if they have a history of unsafe relationships.

However, experts warn that multiple risks stem from AI relationships, including data safety concerns, emotional commodification, and the inability to form relationships with other humans.
