Nova Launcher's new AI assistant wants your contacts, calls, and location data – and it'll cost you

An APK teardown of Nova Launcher v8.6.8 beta suggests that the developers are experimenting with a built-in AI assistant. In addition, the launcher will request more data from users, and a new, monthly subscription may be introduced.
In September 2025, Founder and Creator of Nova Launcher, Kevin Barry, announced his retirement from Branch, the company that owned the Android launcher at the time, and said that he would no longer be involved in future development.
Everybody feared this would herald the end of Nova Launcher. Then, Instabridge stepped in and acquired the Android launcher.
Ever since the acquisition, there have been whispers about new features, including the introduction of ads.
Or, as Instabridge said when purchasing the Android launcher: “Nova needs a sustainable business model to support ongoing development and maintenance.”
But what does a “sustainable business model” look like?
We can’t say for sure at this time, but Nova Launcher’s APK code might reveal some details about where the company is heading.
According to Android Authority, Nova Launcher v8.6.8 beta includes several strings that point to an upcoming AI feature called “Nova AI.”

Nova AI is a built-in chatbot that lives in the launcher itself. It’s located in Nova’s search bar, which is accessed by swiping left from the home screen. To function, the launcher requires much more data than the software currently collects, including access to app usage, contacts, call history, calendar, and location.
The APK teardown also mentions an “inner circle” of contacts, which Nova AI will use to provide relationship-aware answers. Access to location data is needed to present weather information, local recommendations, and travel information for commuters.
Furthermore, a “Nova Plus” subscription tier is mentioned in the Android launcher’s APK code. This subscription tier will exist next to Nova Launcher Prime, a one-time subscription that unlocks all features. Nova Plus offers higher daily limits on AI messages and faster answers.
“These findings point to a monumental and likely controversial pivot for Nova Launcher. The transition from a highly customizable app launcher to a proactive, data-hungry AI agent marks a complete shift in the classic app’s identity,” Android Authority explains.
It’s worth remembering that these newly discovered features may not make an appearance. However, they do indicate that major changes are on their way.
