The best VPNs for the Netherlands in 2026 – detailed list
During in-house research into the best VPNs for the Netherlands, I focused on the aspects that are crucial for users in this region. The number one factor was servers in the Netherlands, but I couldn’t overlook other factors as well, including speeds, security, geo-block removal capabilities, and other extra features. In the end, I selected 5 excellent VPNs with different strengths, so you can easily find a suitable service for your specific needs.
1. NordVPN – best overall VPN for the Netherlands
| Rating: | |
| Based in: | Panama |
| Servers/countries: | 9,500+ servers in 149 countries |
| Simultaneous connections: | 10 |
| Price: | From $3.09/month |
| Current deal: | Get 76% OFF NordVPN + 3 months free |
In my search for the best VPN for the Netherlands, NordVPN demonstrated the best results in many areas I evaluated. I was particularly impressed with its security feature variety, although that depends on which subscription plan you choose. Still, the Basic plan is enough for most users.
NordVPN offers 9,500+ servers across 149 countries, 220+ of which are in the Netherlands alone. I’m glad that this massive fleet includes many specialty server categories, mainly for security. Some of my favorite options are Double VPN, Onion over VPN, and P2P for improved torrenting performance.
NordVPN’s servers worked well at unblocking various streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Max. And I experienced no notable lag or buffering. This is not surprising, considering that with the NordLynx tunneling protocol, NordVPN retained around 90% of the original internet speed when connected to NL servers.
That said, NordVPN truly stood out in the security category, thanks to its wide range of features in this area. For starters, it offers two kill switches – one for the internet and another for specific apps you choose. It also offers scam call protection and Dark Web Monitor Pro, which includes monitoring of credit cards, IDs, and social security numbers. Then there’s Threat Protection Pro, an all-encompassing cybersecurity perk for blocking ads, trackers, and even malware.
The service is also excellent for anonymity enthusiasts. For one, it is based in Panama, without ties to the Five Eyes alliance. Of course, I think most people are more interested in the provider’s no-logs policy. In NordVPN’s case, it was independently audited six times as of November 2025.
You can get a NordVPN free trial for 3 days through the Google Play Store. Otherwise, subscriptions start at $3.09/month and come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
2. Surfshark VPN – well-rounded Dutch VPN for frugal users
| Rating: | |
| Based in: | The Netherlands |
| Servers/countries | 4,500+ servers in 100 countries |
| Simultaneous connections: | No limit |
| Price: | From $1.99/month |
| Current deal: | Now up to 87% OFF Surfshark + 3 months FREE |
Surfshark is my go-to recommendation if you want performance levels similar to NordVPN at more affordable prices. This VPN has fewer servers and features than the #1 VPN for the Netherlands, but that’s expected since the VPN is cheaper.
Server-wise, Surfshark has 4,500+ servers across 100+ countries in total, which puts it above IPVanish yet behind NordVPN, Proton VPN, and PureVPN regarding sheer numbers. How many are in the Netherlands is unclear, but I don’t think that’s very relevant. What is important is that Surfshark, like NordVPN, offers a handful of specialty server categories. There’s MultiHop, which is similar to NordVPN’s Double VPN. The other one is Static IP, which always grants the same IP if you need one. There’s even one static IP server in the Netherlands.
The speeds certainly did not disappoint during in-house testing. As we connected to the Dutch Surfshark servers, the VPN maintained great speed retention during every test. The average came around to nearly 93%, which makes it the fastest VPN on this list.
Surfshark's support for unlimited devices is appealing, too, which is surprising considering the provider’s affordable price. This means you can use one Surfshark account to protect the devices of your whole family. IPVanish is another Dutch VPN with this perk, although it didn’t perform as well during our in-house tests.
Surfshark offers a 7-day free trial on the Google Play and Apple App stores, making it more appealing than NordVPN in this regard. Meanwhile, subscription prices start at $1.99/month, although you can go for pricier options if you want more features. Either way, the provider includes a 30-day money-back guarantee to prevent buyer’s remorse.
3. Proton VPN – privacy-focused VPN for the Netherlands with a free version
| Rating: | |
| Based in: | Switzerland |
| Servers/countries: | 20,300+ servers in 148 countries |
| Simultaneous connections: | 10 |
| Price: | From $2.99/month |
| Current deal: | Get up to 70% OFF Proton VPN |
Proton VPN is the only VPN on this list that offers an unlimited free version. It’s a great alternative if you can’t afford the premium version, especially since it includes servers in the Netherlands. However, its lack of features makes it appear underwhelming compared to other Dutch VPN providers. As such, I’ll focus on Proton VPN’s premium version for this article.
Proton VPN is one of the pricier VPNs on this list, starting at $2.99/month. However, it also has the most expansive server network, boasting 20,300+ servers across 148 countries, including 64 servers in the Netherlands.
As for speeds, Proton VPN is certainly quite fast. When connected to the servers in the Netherlands, the VPN maintained the average speed retention speed at around 89%. While not as fast as Surfshark or NordVPN, the difference is basically negligible.
Personally, I recommend Proton VPN because of its outstanding privacy credentials. First, it’s based in Switzerland, a well-known haven of confidentiality. Second, Securitum audited the provider’s no-logs policy three times. Like NordVPN, Proton VPN is committed to conducting these third-party audits annually. Lastly, Proton VPN’s apps are open-source, which is an incredible commitment to transparency.
Proton VPN also offers excellent security and convenience features. For one, it has streaming-optimized servers, making it easier to unblock geo-restricted video content on platforms like Netflix and Disney+. It also offers a few security-focused server categories, such as Secure Core, P2P, and Tor, which are similar to NordVPN's.
In terms of pricing, Proton VPN's premium plans are budget-friendly, with prices starting at just $2.99/month. Of course, you can use the VPN’s free version too, since it offers free, unlimited servers in the Netherlands, just keep in mind that you cannot choose the server, so it’s a bit of a gamble. Plus, free servers are more likely to be overcrowded.
4. IPVanish – solid Dutch VPN for families
| Based in: | |
| Based in: | United States |
| Server/countries | 3,400+ servers in 113 countries |
| Simultaneous connections: | No limit |
| Price: | From $2.19/month |
| Current deal: | Now up to 83% OFF IPVanish |
IPVanish is a well-rounded VPN with excellent fundamentals, making it a worthwhile choice for anyone needing a reliable Dutch VPN. It offers speedy connections and plenty of security features to ensure carefree online browsing.
Like Surfshark, IPVanish supports unlimited device connections with one account, making it an ideal choice as a family VPN. Regarding servers, IPVanish offers 3,400+ servers across 113 countries, which means its server fleet is smaller than other VPNs’ on this list. Nonetheless, you can choose from 68 servers in Amsterdam. Another interesting aspect is that IPVanish offers customizable Double Hop servers, similar to Surfshark’s MultiHop servers.
During speed tests, IPVanish was the slowest out of all 5 VPNs, but certainly not slow. It kept the speed retention at around 85% on the Dutch servers, which is very impressive. You can certainly expert buffer-free streaming and lag-free browsing when using this VPN.
IPVanish comes with many security perks as well. For example, it includes Threat Protection for blocking ads, trackers, and malware, which is similar to NordVPN’s feature of the same name. There’s also split tunneling if you want to customize your VPN connection on a per-app basis. However, if you pick IPVanish’s Advanced subscription plan, you’ll gain unique perks like a secure browser and cloud file backup, which aren’t offered by most other VPNs.
IPVanish starts at just $2.19/month, making it one of the more affordable Dutch VPNs on the market. It also offers a 7-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee, meaning you can test it well in advance to see if it suits your needs.
5. PureVPN – budget-friendly Netherlands VPN for privacy
| Rating: | |
| Based in: | British Virgin Islands |
| Servers/countries: | 6,000+ servers in 65 countries |
| Simultaneous connections: | 10 |
| Price: | From $2.15/month |
| Current deal: | Now 83% OFF PureVPN + 3 FREE months |
PureVPN is another well-rounded VPN for the Netherlands that offers great fundamental features and a few unique extras that make it stand out. Like many other VPNs on this list, it offers both affordable subscriptions with just the basics and pricier options with bonus features for improved cybersecurity.
PureVPN has a fleet of 6,000+ servers across 65 countries. The server numbers are greater than Surfshark’s and IPVanish’s, but the country variety is well below average. Still, there are at least 45 well-performing VPN servers in the Netherlands. I’m also happy that PureVPN comes with a few specialty server categories, such as P2P, quantum resistance, and port forwarding.
You can expect stable speeds from PureVPN. The test conducted by Cybernews researchers showed that the VPN can retain nearly 92% of the original baseline speeds on average. This is the second best result after Surfshark.
As the name suggests, PureVPN’s Standard subscription tier only includes essential security features, such as a kill switch and tracker blocker. The next tier unlocks a password manager, which you can also get with NordVPN’s package. Lastly, the Max subscription includes data removal services, dark web monitoring, and unlimited eSIM data for comprehensive security while traveling in the Netherlands or elsewhere worldwide.
This VPN starts at only $2.15/month, which is just as affordable as Surfshark and IPVanish. You can test PureVPN for 7 days, but the trial costs $0.99. Alternatively, there’s a 31-day money-back guarantee if you want to test the VPN for longer.

-

- That’s it, you now have a different IP address for accessing Dutch content anywhere
Why do you need a VPN in the Netherlands?
VPNs are popular because of their excellent cybersecurity benefits and usefulness in other areas. Here’s a rundown of the benefits you gain from a top-tier VPN for the Netherlands:
- Privacy and security. A reliable VPN will hide your online activities, IP address, and geographical location from unwelcome onlookers, such as your ISP, government agencies, and even malicious threat actors. You’ll also gain much-needed privacy online, which is becoming increasingly rare nowadays since many web companies are tracking our every move.
- Accessing Dutch content abroad. Having a VPN with servers in the Netherlands allows you to unblock Dutch content while traveling abroad. This applies to streaming services like NPO Plus and online banks like Bunq.
- Watching geo-blocked international content. The reverse also applies, meaning you can access foreign content in the Netherlands that’s normally unavailable in the country. That means you’ll be able to enjoy US-exclusive streaming services like Hulu or any other foreign services.
- Bypass torrenting site blocks. Many torrenting websites like The Pirate Bay and KickassTorrents are blocked in the Netherlands. A VPN can unblock these sites, but remember that you shouldn’t use them to download copyrighted content.
- Improve your gaming experience. A good gaming VPN can improve your gaming experience by reducing your chances of suffering from DDoS attacks. It can also enhance ping and reduce lag if your ISP is throttling your connection.
- Extra VPN features. Many of the best VPN services include extra features that improve other areas of your digital life. The most common inclusion is an ad blocker, but some also provide a password manager to protect your online accounts better.
Internet censorship in the Netherlands
The Netherlands' digital landscape is relatively peaceful, with no significant restrictions or censorship. Actually, the Freedom House has rated the Netherlands’ freedom on the internet 84/100 – a terrific score. Additionally, it’s one of the top countries with the most broadband subscriptions per 100 people.
However, the Dutch government is waging war against illegal torrenting sites. Most ISPs have to block The Pirate Bay websites (and other P2P websites) due to copyright infringement. If you get caught torrenting, you may get fined. Luckily, you can avoid almost any issues by hiding your IP address and encrypting your data with a P2P-friendly VPN.
Torrenting in the Netherlands
In general, torrenting is legal in the Netherlands. However, what you download, not how you download, determines the legality. As in many other countries, if you get copyrighted material through P2P services, you might get fined. Additionally, most ISPs block major torrenting sites, like The Pirate Bay, LimeTorrents, or KickassTorrents.
While we don’t condone piracy, we want to keep our readers safe, and there are so many privacy and anonymity benefits to using a VPN. For example, NordVPN can hide your IP address and encrypt your data. That way, you’ll be virtually untraceable on the web. Thus, neither your ISP nor other snoopers will see what you’re doing and downloading.
Netherlands content you can watch with a VPN
Streaming movies and TV shows online remains a popular pastime activity in the Netherlands and elsewhere worldwide. With a capable VPN, you can enjoy popular Dutch and foreign cinema anywhere without breaking the bank.
Here’s a quick overview of some of the most popular streaming services you’ll be able to unlock with a VPN in the Netherlands:
- Netflix Netherlands
- Disney+
- ViaPlay
- Videoland
- Amazon Prime Video
- HBO Max
- Apple TV+
- SkyShowtime
- NLZIET
- Canal Plus
- NPO Start and NPO Plus
- iQIYI
Depending on your region, these and other online streaming platforms offer different content libraries. So, it’s worth investing in a top-tier streaming VPN if you want the greatest variety of movies and TV shows at your fingertips.
