Data breach at Allianz Life affects “majority” of its 1.4 million customers

United States life insurance company Allianz Life has acknowledged that personal information of a “majority” of its 1.4 million customers has been stolen.
“On July 16th, 2025, a malicious threat actor gained access to a third-party, cloud-based CRM system used by Allianz Life. The threat actor was able to obtain personally identifiable data related to the majority of Allianz Life’s customers, financial professionals, and select Allianz Life employees, using a social engineering technique,” a company spokesperson told several news outlets, including TechCrunch.
Upon discovery, the insurance company took immediate action to prevent further escalation and informed the FBI of the incident. The primary investigation showed that there’s no evidence that the Allianz Life network or other company systems were accessed.
“Our investigation is ongoing, and we have begun the process of reaching out to individuals impacted with dedicated resources to assist them. This incident is related only to Allianz Life, which currently has 1.4 million customers,” the spokesperson added.
He wouldn’t say if the insurance company had received any messages or a ransom demand from the attackers. It’s also unclear what personal information has been stolen.
According to BleepingComputer, ShinyHunters is responsible for the data breach at Allianz Life.
ShinyHunters is an international cyber threat group that first emerged in 2020 and has targeted several high-profile victims, including Ticketmaster, luxury retailer Neiman Marcus, American automotive parts seller Advanced Auto Parts, and Spanish bank Santander.
Although law enforcement authorities have arrested alleged members of ShinyHunters several times, including recently in France, the hacking group continues to make victims.
Allianz Life disclosed the data breach on Saturday to the Office of the Maine Attorney General, but couldn’t say how many people were actually affected by the incident. As mentioned before, Allianz Life has approximately 1.4 million customers. Its parent company, Allianz, has more than 125 million customers worldwide.
