The comedy duo announced in a 46-minute-long video that they felt like they needed to keep their relationship hidden due to Dan Howell’s homophobic childhood.
While the pair kept their friends to lovers story a secret for many years, “phans” continued to believe in the conspiracy that Dan and Phil were in a relationship.
Dan and Phil fans, who call themselves the “Phandom,” seemingly invaded the pair's privacy, constantly barraging them with comments over the alleged relationship.
However, the internet’s reaction to Dan and Phil’s relationship revelation has been overwhelmingly positive, wholesome, and humorous.
“I’m so glad I didn’t kill myself,” said one YouTube user, who received 32,000 likes and hundreds of responses on the comment.

Internet celebrities and online privacy don’t gel
What’s glaringly obvious about this announcement is the time it took the pair to announce their relationship, which started around 2010.
While many users said that the comedy duo was “waiting for their audiences' frontal lobes to develop” before announcing the news, others have questioned the pair's privacy.
One YouTube user said that Dan and Phil “never owed us an explanation, ever. The pressure you two have been through in the public eye is insane, along with the disrespect to your privacy.”
“Listen. Not our business. Never been our business. Fully aware it’s parasocial. But after all these years, I’m both very, very happy for you both and feeling a bizarre sense of relief,” said on YouTube comment.
Naturally, fans who were rooting for “phan” took it to extremes, and the pair said that they didn’t announce their relationship sooner because they “didn’t want to be put in a box.”
Dan and Phil also said that those rooting for the relationship took their theories too far, and they became “too loud to ignore.”
