What is Group 7 on TikTok? The viral trend turning algorithm experiments into marketing gold

Singer and viral TikTok influencer Sophia James has sensationally promoted her new single “So Unfair” with a marketing ploy that has caught on at light speed.

Sophia mentions in her video, with her own single as backing track (unbeknownst to fans), that she is conducting “just a little science experiment” as she made separate posts for separate groups.

Groups 1-6 featured mainly still images or the singer miming her new single, but Group 7’s vid was the exception in the sequence, as it featured direct engagement with the TikToker.

“If you're watching this video, you're in Group 7. I've posted seven videos tonight, and this is the seventh one.”

By addressing the audience directly, she was able to create a sense of FOMO (fear of missing out) and exclusivity, whether or not they were savvy enough to be in on the joke.

Intriguingly, when browsing the comments of the other groups – for example in Group 5, the one commenter, amidst a sway of similar comments posted “Omg, it must be SO embarrassing to be in groups 1-6.”

By earning this “badge of honor,” Sophia managed to turn algorithmic chaos into a sense of conformity, with humor as the main engagement driver.

With TikTok sending small batches of a video to users' feeds to test engagement levels, a select few would have received a random group (lower than 7) – piquing their curiosity.

Because Sophia James included more engagement with the seventh video, it created a curiosity gap – Why am I in Group 7? That question nudged viewers to hunt down the other six posts, announce their group in the comments, and tag friends.

In turn, various participatory loops occur while the influencer’s new single plays in the background. In other words, a little meta, self-referential humour for those in the know.

All in all, it seems like Group 7 has hit the right notes.
