Inside Japan’s muscle girls bar breaking stereotypes of feminine beauty

From Tokyo to Instagram, X, and TikTok, the muscle girl bar is taking over social feeds. Tourists and locals alike flock to see strong women, post clips, and share the craze online.

Instead of going to a strip bar or a seedy call-girl spot in Tokyo’s Kabukichō district, it’s more of-the-moment to check out some muscle girls in sports bras.

Initially looking like a tourist hot spot, the muscle girls bar has been thriving since it opened in 2020. On socials like TikTok and X, the comments mostly focus on novelty.

Even Reuters posted the trend on its X account, featuring Manager Hari saying, “In Japan, people generally think that women with small breasts, a slender back, and skinny legs are attractive. But the customers who come here to ‘Muscle Girls’ prefer thicker arms and legs.”

One X user, @Axel Gear, shrugged: “It's not that deep, it's just a fetish for some people.”

Hira, a cultural commentator, might beg to differ. She notes how conventions of female beauty are baked into Japanese culture, especially for teenage girls.

“They look at magazines and social media and think I’m fatter than her – I’m no good,” she said.

“This idea that skinny is beautiful, it’s a curse.”
