Apple is working on in-house chips for Bluetooth and WiFi connections that could be used in next year's products.
The new chip could replace some parts currently provided by Broadcom Inc., a company that makes semiconductor and infrastructure software products.
Also known by the code name Proxima, the chip has been under development for a few years and is expected to be used in Apple's products in 2025.
Proxima will be produced by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC), the company that makes Apple's other in-house chips.
The new chip will be used in home devices, including TV set-top boxes and HomePod mini smart speakers. According to Bloomberg, it will also be used in next year's iPhone and expand to iPads and Macs in 2026.
Apple has also been working on in-house cellular modem chips, which would replace those made by Qualcomm.
The company is also partnering with Broadcom to make its first server chip, named Baltra, which would be used to process AI.
Apple and other tech companies have been finding it difficult to break free from Nvidia's costly processors despite their attempts to create in-house chips.
In 2023, Apple arranged a multibillion-dollar deal with Broadcom to develop 5G radio frequency components.
