A couple of months after releasing its Gemini Live for Pixel devices, Google is now bringing it to iOS via the Gemini app.
While Gemini was previously available via the Google app on iOS devices, Apple users couldn’t use Gemini Live until now.
Google says that it has officially released its app. However, as of Friday morning, it wasn’t yet available in some European markets.
Gemini Live is a conversational AI assistant, akin to ChatGPT’s Advanced voice mode. It enables users to talk to it like a human, allowing them to interrupt it and change the conversation.
After installing the app, users can personalize Gemini Live by choosing one of ten voices in ten different languages.
As Google explains in its blog post, Gemini Live is useful for practicing for an upcoming interview, finding activities in the city, or brainstorming new ideas.
With the introduction of Gemini to iOS, Google is trying to use its advantage in AI over Apple.
While Apple recently updated its virtual assistant Siri with the release of iOS 18.1, it still lags behind and hasn’t yet reached the capabilities Apple announced this year at its Worldwide Developers Conference. Some of Siri's improvements will be available next year with the release of iOS 18.4.
As Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously reported based on its sources inside Apple, the company believes that it is still two years behind its competitors in the AI race.
To compensate for this, Apple is bringing ChatGPT to iPhones.
In any case, ChatGPT will likely be the first option for most users. As some point out on Reddit, ChatGPT is more capable.
“I’ve had much better experiences and results from GPT than Gemini. I remember using Gemini for conversions and maybe by the 5th or 6th conversion, it started giving me totally incorrect answers,” explained one Redditor.
