Google reportedly has a whole team working on the new device.
It’s been five years since Google launched a laptop under the Pixel name. The PixelbookGo, released back in 2019, was an affordable touchscreen laptop running on ChromeOS.
A new report claims that we might soon see another Pixel-branded laptop. This time it would be a premium device with specs powerful enough to compete with MacBook Pros, Dell XPS, and Microsoft Surface laptops.
According to Android Headlines, which claims to have received the information in an internal email, the company has moved beyond the concept stage. Google reportedly has a dedicated team working on the project, meaning that the laptop could ramp up pretty quickly.
The report, which doesn’t disclose any technical details, suggests that the new device could be running on ChromeOS.
Another report by an Android Authority suggests that Google is considering migrating Chrome OS to Android to make it more appealing to tablet users.
This could mean that the new laptop runs on updated Android. However, the Chrome OS transition is labeled as a multi-year project, and the updated OS may take longer to release.
Google has previously released several laptops under the Pixel name, including premium Chromebook Pixel in 2013 and 2015, and some affordable options like PixelBook and PixelBook Go.
Currently, the company sells Pixel smartphones, tablets, watches, and buds.
The release of the latest Pixel 9 smartphones appears to have been particularly successful. In the two months before October, the company increased its market share in North America from 4.76% to 12.9%, according to Statcounter.
