No metaverse, just high-quality gaming and movie-watching with Microsoft’s future mixed-reality headset.
Microsoft has teamed up with Samsung, which will provide the company with an OLED on silicon (OLEDoS) display for Microsoft’s mixed reality (MR) devices.
Microsoft’s future device will be used to watch movies and play video games instead of being another tool for connecting to the metaverse.
TheElec, an online news outlet, first reported that Samsung is expected to equip Microsoft with hundreds of thousands of OLEDoS units.
This new generation of display technology is set to provide ultra-high resolution for mixed reality (MR), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) device users.
The latest MR device is expected to launch in 2026, as it will take time for OLEDoS specifications to be finalized and displays sent to the US.
Microsoft has been in the mixed reality device game since 2015, when its first HoloLens head-mounted display was introduced. In 2019, the company released HoloLens 2, which was equipped with hand and eye tracking and voice commands.
