In an hour-long presentation, Nintendo officially introduced the Nintendo Switch 2. The new handheld will be available on June 5th for a retail price starting at €469.
Like its predecessor, the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature an LCD display. This time around, the screen has a resolution of 1080p instead of 720p on the original handheld. The 7.9” screen also offers support for high dynamic range (HDR) and a refresh rate of 120Hz. Games can be played at up to a 4K resolution at 60fps when using the dock.
Nintendo’s newest gaming console has 256GB of onboard storage, a considerable upgrade from the first edition, which only had 32GB. The second-generation Switch no longer supports normal microSD cards to expand storage but requires microSD Express cards, which are faster storage cards.
As Nintendo showed in the Nintendo Switch 2’s reveal trailer back in January, it also has two USB-C ports for connecting accessories and charging.
The Joy Con controllers have also been improved. The controllers have larger SL and SR buttons and can be magnetically connected to the console. They can also be used as a mouse by default. However, games have to support this feature.

With the newly added C button, users can activate a chat menu that lets you access GameChat controls. This is a native voice chat app where users can talk to each other via the microphone built into the screen, even when playing other games. In doing so, users can stream their gameplay to each other.
The GameChat feature works both docked and in handheld mode and supports up to four players simultaneously. Gamers are free to use this feature until March 2026. After this date, they will need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is backward compatible, meaning you can play the games you purchased for the original Nintendo Switch. There will also be paid upgrades for existing Switch games. These are called Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games and will include games like Super Mario Party Jamboree, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
In addition, Nintendo will be releasing exclusive Nintendo Switch 2 games.
Nintendo has also introduced GameShare, a feature that allows gamers to play the same game over a local network, even when somebody doesn’t own a copy of the game. Up to four players can play one game copy with each other.
The game cards for the Nintendo Switch 2 will be red instead of the black cards for the original Switch.
Nintendo also announced an updated Joy Con Pro Controller. The controller largely resembles the existing one but features two new buttons on the back of the device: the GL and GR buttons. They can be programmed as desired. The Joy Con Pro Controller also has a new C button and a 3.5mm audio jack.
Lastly, Nintendo showed footage of brand-new games, including Mario Kart World and Kirby Air Riders.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will be available on June 5th, 2025, starting at €469.99. If you’re willing to cough up €509.99, you’ll also receive a copy of Mario Kart World. You can pre-order the Nintendo Switch 2 on April 8th on Nintendo’s online store.
