Samsung to equip its budget-friendly smartphone series with flexible OLED

The smartphone, featuring a new type of display, could be released next year.
Samsung’s future Galaxy S Fan Edition (FE) smartphone series will be equipped with a flexible OLED. Thanks to the new panel, the device is expected to be thinner than the existing Galaxy S24 FE model.
Tech insider Jukan Choi shared via X that Samsung Display should start mass-producing OLED panels for the Galaxy S25 FE this month.
Its predecessor, the Galaxy S24 FE, should be released in the second half of 2025.
The FE edition is a semi-flagship model that’s cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy S series. According to Choi, it also has “slightly downgraded performance” compared with the company’s Galaxy S devices.

One of the specifications that makes the 6.7-inch Galaxy S25 FE stand out from its predecessors is that it includes a flexible OLED instead of a rigid one.
The difference between the two is that the device is much more bendable with flexible OLED. Such a screen is usually used for flagship smartphones, making it easier for them to be manufactured thinner and implement other design changes. However, adding such a screen means the smartphone will also be pricier.
The company also chose to use flexible OLED to separate the Galaxy S25 FE from lower-end models, such as the Galaxy A series.
According to research firm Omdia, global shipments of flexible OLED smartphones increased in the first quarter of 2025 by 15% year-on-year to 151 million units.
While the implementation of flexible OLED is increasing, the use of LCD and rigid OLED in smartphones is declining.
