Samsung Galaxy XR: An Apple Vision Pro for Android users?

Samsung has introduced its Apple Vision Pro rival, and it’s almost half the price.

Samsung has just launched its first mixed-reality headset, the Galaxy XR, powered by Google’s Android XR operating system.

The new product comes after Samsung’s collaboration with Google and Qualcomm Technologies.

Thanks to this partnership, the Galaxy XR comes with Qualcomm’s most advanced chip for mixed and virtual reality headsets, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Platform.

Galaxy XR is also the first device to be powered by Android XR, an operating system built for headsets and glasses.

The headset's specifications include 256GB of storage and 16GB of RAM. It weighs 1.20lb (around 545g) and includes a battery that can last for up to two hours of general use. The headset can also be used while the battery is charging.

Galaxy XR features powered by Google Android XR OS

The headset, Samsung's first mixed-reality product, is powered by the Android XR operating system. This means users can download apps from Google Play, which now includes apps for XR.

These include apps from streaming services such as HBO Max and Peacock, as well as updated apps such as Google Maps, Google Photos, YouTube, Chrome, and others. Google Play also has immersive games and more than 50 “new experiences made for XR” from Adobe, Fox Sports, Calm, and more.

The new device also comes with built-in Gemini, which, according to the company, should provide users with help faster and more accurately.

With Galaxy VR, users can turn YouTube videos into “immersive 180 and 360-degree VR content,” convert their photo and video library into 3D, and explore various places before actually going there through Immersive View on Google Maps.

The Galaxy VR could also be turned into a workspace with multiple browsers, document files, and apps open. Users can also call for Gemini’s assistance, whether that’s to answer a question or help organize all of the open windows.

Samsung’s Galaxy XR is already available for purchase for $1800 in the US and South Korea.
