Snap races with Meta to release AR glasses for consumers

The augmented reality (AR) glasses are expected to be cheaper than the Apple Vision Pro headset.

Snap Inc. is developing its first augmented-reality glasses for consumer use, which it plans to release in 2026.

The device, called Specs, is reported to be a smaller version of Spectacles, which the company revealed to software developers last year under the Spectacles Developer Program.

The program operates under a subscription model, through which users receive a Spectacles device for a $99 monthly fee.

The glasses run via the Snap OS operating system and are controlled by hand gestures.

The motivation behind Snap’s release of AR glasses for consumers could be related to the fact that Meta also plans to release its AR glasses in 2027.

Snap’s first Spectacles were introduced in 2016, but they focused on image and video capturing instead of augmented reality features.

It’s also been reported that Specs won’t have an external battery featuring a new design that focuses on comfort and usability.

The glasses are expected to come in black, with “special editions” following later.

The device will be equipped with an AI assistant, which could help in situations such as changing a tire. It will also have different areas, such as a “workstation” where users can browse, stream, and play games with others.

The glasses will also support different AI models, such as ChatGPT and Gemini, which would allow developers to create AI-driven Lenses that add 3D effects, characters, and objects. Users could also use AI in everyday settings, such as translating text or getting recipe suggestions based on the contents of their refrigerator.

According to Snap Inc. CEO Evan Spiegel, via Bloomberg, the device will cost less than the Apple Vision Pro headset, which is priced at $3500.
