Many want the headset, but few can afford it. What will Apple do about this?
In October, it was reported that the Apple Vision Pro headset production would be scaled down, with further cutbacks following in November.
The company initially expected to sell over 800,000 headsets in 2024. However, Apple had to revise its expectations and reduce the number to 400,000-450,000 units.
The reason for this is the gadget's hefty price of $3499.
Luxshare, a China-based electronics manufacturer and Apple Vision Pro headsets assembler, has made between 500,000 and 600,000 devices.
So, despite predictions that demand for the device could increase before the upcoming holiday season, Apple shouldn't worry about running out of stock.
The issue with stock and sales becomes even more evident compared to Meta's Quest 3, which has reportedly sold better than expected and costs just $500.
Recently, an internal study by Apple revealed that the company is also working towards its own smart glasses, which will hopefully be more affordable than the Vision Pro headset.
The company's shift to smart glasses, which could be launched in 2027 at the earliest, doesn't mean that the company is stopping with the Apple Vision Pro 2.
It was first reported that Apple was pausing work on the second Apple Vision Pro. However, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, development is ongoing, and the new device could be released at the end of 2025 or at the beginning of 2026.
The company has also admitted that its first headset was created for early adopters rather than for mass use. Despite the low sales, the company is expanding its availability worldwide, with the device becoming available in the United Arab Emirates and South Korea on November 15th.
