Hands-on with the world’s first rollable PC: new tech from Lenovo

There is something captivating about watching a laptop screen roll.

A few years after introducing the concept of the world’s first rollable laptop, Lenovo unveiled the first commercially available version, the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6, at the Consumer Electronics Show 2025 in Las Vegas.

At first glance, it looks like a regular 14-inch laptop with an OLED screen and a 400 nits peak brightness.

However, five seconds after pressing a dedicated button on the keyboard with two arrows, the laptop unfolds to reveal a 16.7-inch display.

To return the laptop to its original size, pressing the same button activates special motors that retract the screen beneath the keyboard.

ThinkBook Plus operates in two sizes: 14-inch and 16.7-inch, with no intermediate options. When at 14-inch, the laptop has a resolution of 2000 x 1600, and when unrolled, resolution becomes 2000 x 2050.

Why a rollable laptop?

According to Lenovo representatives, the device is designed for small and medium-sized businesses and users who need extra screen space without the hassle of carrying a portable monitor.

The rollable screen may be useful for tasks like coding, as it allows users to view more lines of code at once, and watch content like TikTok videos or YouTube Shorts.

One of the ThinkBook's special features is enhanced multitasking capabilities. During the demo, a Lenovo representative showed us how to load a few apps on two 16:9 windows and how to use snap layouts.

According to the company, the main challenge in creating a device was making a durable hinge mechanism. Currently, the hinges are made to withstand 30,000 openings.

Does the rollable screen have any downsides? As with all foldable screens, there are some creases visible at the lower part of the display, though they are not particularly noticeable.

There will be a few variations of the device. The top configurations come with Intel Core 7, 32GB of RAM, and up to 1TB SSD.

The ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 will retail at $3500 for the base model and will be available in May.

Lenovo likes to experiment with novel concepts and design. In last year's CES, the company revealed a 2-in-1 laptop that combines Windows and Android.

The company has also demonstrated a proof-of-concept laptop with a transparent screen. Currently, there is no word on whether it will be commercialized.
