Apple’s drop in sales opened the door for Xiaomi to become the second-largest phone maker.
The Chinese company reportedly exceeded expectations in the smartphone market by selling more devices than Apple for the first time since August 2021.
Known as one of the fastest-growing smartphone manufacturers, Xiaomi surpassed Apple in August 2024’s month-over-month (MoM) sales. This was largely due to Apple’s decrease in sales just before the launch of its latest iPhone 16.
With this in mind, future rankings might change just as quickly, with Apple taking back second or even hitting first place in the market, notes Counterpoint Research.
Nevertheless, the recent situation can’t solely be attributed to Apple’s decline. Xiaomi has been working on “aggressive growth” in recent quarters, focusing on more affordable devices such as the Redmi 13 and Note 13 series.
