YouTube Premium price hike enrages users

YouTube Premium individual and family plans will now cost significantly more in more than ten countries.

Reddit users were quick to notice that the streaming service platform has increased its pricing, reaching a more than 50% rise in some countries.

The countries where YouTube Premium pricing was impacted the most were Sweden, where the Family plan went from 179 SEK ($17.50) to 279 SEK ($27); Singapore, where the Family plan increased from 17.98 SGD ($14) to 27.98 SGD ($27), and Columbia, where it went from 26,900 COP ($6) to 41,900 COP ($10).

An email explaining the reason for the drastic increase in prices was sent to users. The email stated that “to continue delivering great service and features,” the company has to increase its prices.

However, users online expressed their disagreement, with one Reddit user canceling their membership and encouraging others to do the same:

“I canceled my membership the second I saw the email, and I would implore other YouTube premium members to do the same. Raising the subscription fee where I’m from (Ireland) to €17.99 a month is absolutely absurd and I’ve seen that it’s similar across Europe,” shared the netizen.

The news sparked a discussion online with many sharing their frustration over the price increase.

“Mine went from €17.99 to €25.99. Basically, this is cable TV all over again. The new ‘features’ we’re now paying more for aren’t really features. The endless stories feature is a great way…to make sure they and creators make more money, so why should that matter to us? I get things cost more money now, but this is a really steep hike while getting little in return. Curious how many people just accept it and how many people drop it….,” shared one Reddit user.

“179 SEK to 279 SEK for a family plan in Sweden. I’m canceling! Bye-bye YouTube. It was nice to know you, but I’m not crazy!” added another user online.

With many disappointed users, the subscription price increase may cause a wave of cancellations, with people looking for other alternatives to YouTube Premium or deciding to cut YouTube content consumption altogether.
