The FBI has alerted the public to be vigilant for fraudsters posing as legitimate health insurers and fraud investigators to commit health care fraud.
The criminals are actively disseminating emails and text messages to patients and health care providers, disguising themselves as trusted health care authorities.
“The messages are designed to pressure victims into disclosing protected health information, medical records, personal financial details, or providing reimbursements for alleged service overpayments or non-covered services,” the FBI warns in a public service announcement.
In these types of scams, criminals usually impersonate health insurers and their investigative team members.
The FBI is urging the public to remain vigilant and be suspicious of any unsolicited emails, texts, or calls requesting personal information.
“Never click on links that are included in suspicious and/or unsolicited emails. Use strong passwords and enable multi-factor authentication for all accounts,” the FBI said.
The rule of thumb is to always contact your health insurance provider directly to verify the legitimacy of any claims before sharing personal or health care information.
The FBI wants victims of fraudulent activity to report incidents to its Internet Crime Complaint Center.
Fraud represented the bulk of total cybercrime losses reported in 2024, which saw a record of a staggering $16.6 billion.
