US Bankruptcy Court officials say a massive cyberattack has disrupted the court’s Bankruptcy Noticing Center (BNC) – the system responsible for sending out official notices about hearings, deadlines, and proceedings for all federal bankruptcy cases nationwide.
The outage is the result of an attack on BAE Systems, the third-party aerospace and defense corporation contracted to operate the IT infrastructure of the US notification center – as well as dozens of government and military entities worldwide, including the US Department of Defense and all US military branches.
As a result of the incident, all access to the BNC systems and websites that BAE operates on behalf of the judiciary and the related bankruptcy noticing process are unavailable at this time,the Administrative Office of the US Courts (AO) said in an advisory issued October 15, 2026.
US Courts silent on attack detail
Labeling the attack as a “cybersecurity incident,” the US Courts posted a notice on its website Thursday, although it did not say “what” systems were compromised or “who” could be behind the hit.
It's also unclear whether any US bankruptcy records or sensitive financial information were compromised or stolen from the systems.

And while it appears the main federal system itself was not compromised, the impact on official court notices sent both electronically and by US mail could be far-reaching, disrupting bankruptcy proceedings nationwide.
The notification center handles all official notices court correspondance sent to debtors, creditors, attorneys, and other parties.
As a result of the cyberattack, people involved in bankruptcy cases may miss important deadlines and information related to their cases, hearings, or creditor meetings, leading to delays and potentially major financial consequences.
Cyberattack disrupts courts across US
The AO says it has been “in communication with the impacted courts and is coordinating with BAE Systems."
As of this update, bankruptcy courts in at least 20 states have posted notices warning about disruptions tied to the BNC outage, with more coming in each day.
States so far include Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin, and the US territory of Puerto Rico, which put out a General Order on Friday about the interruption.
The Alaska bankruptcy court, one of the very first to issue a public notice, says it is postponing the scheduling of certain creditor meetings for all cases filed after October 9 until BNC operations resume.
The impact varies by district, with some courts reporting delays in sending official notices and others forced to implement temporary procedures, reschedule hearings, or delay bankruptcy proceedings altogether.
Bankruptcy courts in other states are issuing emergency orders outlining alternative notification procedures and changes to deadlines and hearings.
BAE Systems: Securing critical infrastructure
The AO reports that BAE – a major global IT provider for critical infrastructure – is actively investigating and working to restore operations.

Bankruptcies, which allow an entity to restructure or eliminate debt, can involve:

- Businesses – Chapters 7 or 11
- Municipalities, including cities, towns, villages – Chapter 9
- School districts – Chapter 9
- Family farmers and fishermen – Chapter 12
- Cases involving parties from more than one country – Chapter 15
As for the data, bankruptcy records include a wealth of sensitive information, from complete financial and creditor histories to intellectual property, corporate restructuring, and legal disputes.
Then there is the risk to personally identifiable information (PII) and other private data, such as divorce-related financial obligations, child support, and medical expenses.
