Adobe launches Firefly app to bring AI image and video tools onto phones

Users can now generate and edit AI-powered content on the go with built-in tools like generative fill and text-to-video, no desktop software needed.

Adobe is serious about showcasing its AI-powered image generation and editing tools. So serious, the company is introducing a standalone Firefly mobile application for Android and iOS.

The new app comes with features like generative fill, generative expand, text to image, text to video, and image to video.

The generative fill tool makes it easy to remove or add elements to a photo. For example, think of the uncle you don’t like in your wedding picture and replace him with a friend who couldn’t make it to the big day. Generative expand uses AI to make a photo bigger by adding extra parts, so it fits better on social media or other picture formats that don’t complement the original picture’s size.

The text-based creation flow resembles similar offerings from OpenAI Inc., Alphabet Inc.’s Google, and Meta Platforms Inc. Generated videos are five seconds long, reports Bloomberg.

These features have already been part of Adobe’s software, like Photoshop and Lightroom, for a while. However, the new Firefly app should make them easier to use and let people try the AI tools with a simple design.

The app uses Adobe’s AI by default, but users can also choose AI models from OpenAI or Google to create images or videos by writing text prompts.

The Firefly app is free to download, but you need credits to create content. The content generated on the app is synced to a user’s Creative Cloud account, allowing editing to be continued on a computer.
