Apple working on new satellite-powered features for when you get stranded off-grid

Apple’s future smartphones may allow you to stay connected, check maps, and send pictures even while being off the grid

The company first introduced satellite-related features with Emergency SOS via Satellite in 2022. It came with the release of the iPhone 14, enabling users to contact emergency responders even when cellular service was unavailable.

In the following year, the company expanded the feature by adding Roadside Assistance via satellite, allowing those stranded on the road to contact a roadside service provider if they were “locked out, had a flat tire, or ran out of fuel or charge,” stated Apple.

Apple's Emergency SOS feature is also available on the company’s smartphones, starting with the iPhone 14, and on the Apple Watch Ultra 3, with the possibility of expanding the feature to the iPad.

While Apple users can already send and receive text messages when they’re off the grid, Bloomberg reports that the company plans to expand these satellite-powered features in the future.

One of the features Apple has been developing is a satellite framework for third-party apps, which would enable app developers to integrate satellite connectivity into their applications.

Apple could also introduce satellite connectivity to Maps, enabling Apple Maps users to use the app even without mobile connectivity.

A few new features that the company is working on are also designed to enhance existing ones.

Currently, users can only send and receive text messages via satellite connectivity. However, the company could expand this feature by also allowing users to send photos.

One of the requirements for the feature to function is a clear sky view. Apple is working on allowing users to stay connected without actually having to direct a phone to the sky.

Apple’s future smartphones should feature 5G NTN, which expands 5G connectivity to remote areas.

When can you expect new satellite features to arrive on Apple products?

Apple's satellite-based technology is being developed by the Satellite Connectivity Group (SCG), an in-house division of Apple. The company links its smartphones and Apple Watch Ultra 3 to a satellite network run by Globalstar Inc., which could possibly be acquired by Elon Musk’s Starlink.

For the new features to be rolled out, Globalstar Inc. would need to advance its satellite infrastructure. The company’s acquisition by Starlink could mean that these features would roll out more quickly.

While Apple doesn’t charge for Emergency SOS features, including the future enhancements, it plans to allow users to pay for more advanced features through carriers, SpaceX, or other satellite providers.
