Android users get Apple TV and complain immediately: “It’s a rip-off”

Apple TV original content is already available for Android users, but is it really what they want?

The Apple TV app is now available for Android users, which means they can now access Apple Original movies and TV shows.

From February 12th, Android users can download the Apple TV app from the Google Play store and use it on their smartphones and tablets running Android 10 and later.

Service pricing is the same for Android and iOS users. Android users in the US can subscribe to the service for $10 a month and the MLS Season Pass for $15 a month or $99 per season.

According to Apple, the app was created "to deliver Android users a familiar and intuitive interface."

The new app includes features such as "Continue Watching," which allows users to pick up their TV show or movie where they left off, and "Watchlist," which stores films and TV shows that a user wants to watch in the future. Android users will also be able to download content to watch it offline.

Apple TV was first launched in the US in 2016.

The news that the app would be coming to Android also started a discussion online, with one of the main concerns being whether the app would support Chromecast.

“[...] I can only use our account right now on one TV due to the lack of Android support," wrote one user online.

"As an Android owner, my personal experience with watching Apple TV+ on the Apple TV hardware was unpleasant, to say the least. It locked my account on a daily basis forcing me to log in multiple times, which is annoying [...]," shared another user who suspects that they were "being punished for not being in the Apple ecosystem."

Another user noted, "You don't have access to any of the films/shows you have purchased from Apple. This app is exclusively for the streaming service and its originals ONLY. I kind of hate this, but hey...at least we have the app now."

A month ago, I decided to take up Apple's deal to use its TV streaming services for free and was happy to find that it had several movies I wanted to watch. However, I soon learned that if you want to watch something that is not an Apple original, you have to rent or buy the content.

Wanting to know more about this, I stumbled upon a discussion where people were also confused about having to pay additional costs on top of the subscription for the streaming services.

"With a subscription as expensive as AppleTV why do I still need to spend even more money to watch any of the good movies or shows?" asked an online user.

Many compared Apple TV with other streaming services, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, adding that the Apple subscription model makes no sense.

"[...] when you want to go to the theater, do they charge you a fee to enter the theater and then again to watch the movie? No. Because that's a rip-off. That's exactly what this is," shared another person online.
