The AI browsing assistant Firefox Smart Window beta is now powered by the Mistral Small 4 model for users in the US and Canada, while also expanding access and French-language support for Firefox users in France.
The United Kingdom and Germany are expected to follow later this year.
Firefox users will still be able to choose from multiple other AI models across all markets where Smart Window beta is available, according to Mozilla Corporation, the owner of Firefox.
Smart Window is an optional browsing feature that assists with complex searches and sources information important to users based on their browser tabs.

Mozilla says that the company doesn’t keep users’ chat transcripts, nor does it use conversations to train models or sell user data. Chat content is only shared when users choose to do so.
The integration gives people “control of their interactions with AI,” the companies say.
Mozilla has long championed free web and focused on privacy, while Mistral offers both proprietary and open-weight models.
Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, a CEO at Mozilla Corporation, says that as AI is becoming an important part of the web experience, people shouldn’t be chained to “one company’s self-serving pipeline.”
“With the browser sitting at the heart of the web and online experience, it should be a place where different AI providers can compete and open source has a seat at the table,” Enzor-DeMeo says.
The partnership expands Mistral’s user base by approximately 200,000 of Firefox’s active monthly users.
Mozilla says it selected Mistral Small 4 after evaluating its performance for its AI assistant, including multilingual performance.
Together, the companies approached multilingual and multicultural tuning as a core model feature, rather than adapting an English-first experience for a new market.
