Reddit, a popular community network, banned more than 90 NSFW (not safe for work) subreddits on Wednesday.
Users are still looking for answers on what happened with the social media platform.
The reason for the ban was that these subreddits had been unmoderated.
However, this proved to be not entirely true, as users on the platform proved that many of the banned subreddits are, in fact, moderated.
Soon after, most of the affected subreddits have been brought back.
It was later announced on r/ModSupport that the “issue was solved” and that the situation occurred due to a bug “with one of [...] tools that caused some subreddits to be banned incorrectly.”
The post also stated that the team has been working on fixing the issue, and some communities have already been unbanned.
Among the banned subreddits were communities with several millions of members. For example, r/porn, r/rule34 with nearly four million Redditors, and r/NSFW_gifs with more than two million members. The platform also banned subreddits that post similar to NSFW content, such as r/cubancigars and r/transgender_surgeries.
This isn’t the first time that NSFW subreddits have been banned, the last one happened five months ago.
“This has happened twice now. Bots should not be in charge of banning subs,” wrote one of the users.
More people were involved in the discussion of how this could have happened and why Reddit hadn’t learned its lesson during the first ban.

“The fact that this is the second time in six months that this has happened is very disturbing. When it happened the first time, there should have been test scripts written that would test for this very scenario, and any other possible scenarios that could be thought of so it doesn't happen again. [...] Do better, Reddit,” concluded one Redditor.
