Samsung PCs lose access to C: drive, Microsoft investigates
Microsoft is investigating reports that some Samsung laptops and desktops running Windows 11 have lost access to their C: drives, preventing users from opening files and using applications. But is it an issue on Microsoft’s end?

Microsoft is investigating reports that some Samsung laptops and desktops running Windows 11 have lost access to their C: drives, preventing users from opening files and using applications. But is it an issue on Microsoft’s end?
The issue first appeared after users installed the February Patch Tuesday security update (KB5077181) and subsequent updates.
For some, this resulted in receiving this message: “C:\ is not accessible – Access denied.” In practice, the issue meant that users’ Outlook, Office apps, web browsers, Quick Assist, and system utilities were blocked. In some cases, the denied access to the C: drive prevented administrative tasks such as updating or collecting logs.
Microsoft stated that the issue stems from the Samsung Galaxy Connect app and not from Windows updates.
“While the reports coincided with recent March Patch Tuesday timing, investigation confirmed the issue is not caused by current or previous Windows monthly updates,” the company claimed.
According to Microsoft, the affected devices that seem to cause problems for Windows 11 users include Samsung Galaxy Book 4 models and certain Samsung desktop systems running Windows 11, versions 24H2 and 25H2.
“Affected devices encounter the issue when users execute common actions, such as accessing files, launching applications, or performing administrative tasks, and do not require any specific user action beyond routine operations. In some cases, users are also unable to elevate privileges, uninstall updates, or collect logs due to permission failures,” Microsoft said.

The tech giant confirmed it had worked with Samsung to investigate the problem. The Samsung Galaxy Connect app was temporarily removed from the Microsoft Store, and a stable previous version has been republished to prevent further disruptions.
Microsoft and Samsung claim they are continuing to “develop and validate solutions” for devices that have already been affected.
Users are advised to contact Samsung support for device-specific assistance.
