The exact release date of the company’s largest hard drive is still unknown.
Seagate, an American data storage company, has announced that it's finally launching its 32TB Exos M hard drive equipped with HAMR technology.
Heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) is a magnetic storage technology that provides more capacity to a hard disk drive by heating the disk material during writing, allowing more data to be uploaded to the drive.
Seagate’s drives work on the Mozaic 3+ platform, which supports the product's delivery of “mass-capacity storage at unprecedented areal densities.”
The company has been working on the new drive since 2007. At first, it anticipated releasing HAMR drives within a couple of years. However, the final product took longer to launch.
The product, which is marketed under the Exos M HDD name, was first released in small volumes for select users. Now that it has entered mass production, it will be available to the general public.
The company’s product page suggests that users could choose a drive with 30TB with conventional magnetic recording (CMR) or 32TB with shingled magnetic recording (SMR). The page, however, doesn’t include the price of the product.
While Seaget prepares for the general release of its high-capacity HDDs, it is already competing with Western Digital, a company that also offers digital storage solutions.
However, Western Digital received the upper hand when it released its 32TB hard drive in October 2024.
