Teams now allows users to meet up in immersive 3D events

Microsoft has introduced immersive 3D events – a function that allows users to meet, do presentations, and interact with each other inside virtual spaces. They can be customized and are accessible without leaving the main Teams app.

According to Microsoft, people who attend these events can join as avatars and “interact naturally and feel truly present.”.

They can be organized via Teams calendar, chat, and other collaboration features.

“Immersive events can help drive enhanced engagement and connection for your workforce across multiple points of interest in a single branded event with a tailored experience ideal for all hands, showcases, company events, new employee onboarding, and trainings,” claims Microsoft.

This news comes in the context of Microsoft retiring Mesh, a platform that has served as a virtual event host. It was officially closed on December 1st, and all those still using it are encouraged to transition to immersive events.

The new platform is now offering 3D virtual events where hosts can interact with other avatars and do presentations using branded visuals, images, or videos. The venue can also be customized, but for those who do not feel like it, there are pre-designed templates available, mostly for events that happen in organizations most often, such as all-hands meetings, webinars, and team celebrations.

The 3D meetings also include functions such as one-click starts, integrated Q&A, and supposedly contribute “to efficient attendee management so you can focus on the message, not the logistics.”

According to Microsoft, the platform is accessible without the need for coding skills. Event attendees can participate from their PCs, Macs and Meta Quest headsets.

The company emphasizes that immersive events inherit the same enterprise security, identity management, and compliance protections used in Microsoft 365. Immersive events are accessible for attendees with a standard Teams licence. However, organizers are required to hold a Teams Premium licence.
