Users debate over Toshiba’s warranty policy after it refuses hard drive replacement

Is the demand for data storage caused by AI creating additional problems for users?

One Reddit user shared that Toshiba, a Japanese electronics company, refused to honor the warranty on a recently purchased hard drive.

The Redditor shared that the company they work for placed an order for several 20+TB hard drives.

One of these hard drives failed, so they sent it back, hoping it would get replaced.

Instead, the company informed the customer that they’ll be refunded for it, giving them “the original purchase price,” and “not a refund of the current (significantly higher) replacement price, not replacing the failed hard drive with one of their own or from a competitor.”

The Redditor also shared their two cents on why the company went straight to a refund instead of providing a replacement.

They either sold their “safety stock” amid a recent surge in demand for these components, driven by AI, or because the drivers were actually faulty.

“Both reasons to stay far away,” concluded the user.

The situation sparked an online debate over whether Toshiba was really at fault here.

Some users didn’t see a problem since the consumer received their money back.

“Ideally, they'd replace your drive with a working one. However, since they are willing to refund you the purchase price, I'd say they are still fulfilling their warranty,” wrote one user.

“It is unfortunate, though. I know we'd all rather just have a new working replacement drive,” added the Redditor.

Nevertheless, the original poster took a minute to point out that, because of the price hike on these components, the product no longer costs the same as it did previously.

The situation also prompted some users to question Toshiba’s policy, with one user stating that the company has always followed its refund policy.

However, the other netizen noted that: “Toshiba's shtick was they would honor drive replacement for five years. Less than two years later, that promise is gone.”

According to Toshiba’s warranty return procedure, if the company determines that “the storage product is defective and the drive is covered under the Limited Warranty, you will be directed to contact the repair center [...] and an RMA number will be assigned, refund or replacement procedures will follow.”

Users also noted that Toshiba isn’t the only company doing this.

“I actually double checked with some other vendors for just these shenanigans recently, and for better or worse refunds at the original price were specifically included in the warranty, at their discretion,” wrote one Redditor.

“I’d figure a money back guarantee is at least honoring some part of their warranty, noted another user.

“Normally, prices fall as time goes on. I get that right now it’s the exception, but usually a guarantee of ‘product works or your money back’ was a good thing.”

The surge in demand for AI has affected various resources, including hardware components and computing materials.

Cybernews has previously reported that prices for random-access memory (RAM) chips have skyrocketed.

This has already affected users who decide to update their everyday electronics, such as laptops and smartphones, as prices and delivery times have increased.
