Netflix and streaming performance
Both NordVPN and VyprVPN are really good VPNs for streaming Netflix and other streaming platforms. But one of them is still better equipped than the other for this, and that would be NordVPN. Let’s see why.
First, let’s talk about VyprVPN. During our tests, it was evident that VyprVPN doesn’t struggle much when it comes to streaming. It managed to unblock all of the streaming platforms that we tested it on. However, the IKEv2 protocol had a little trouble with Netflix, but as the WireGuard protocol performed fine, we can get behind that.
Nevertheless, it is worth mentioning that VyprVPN doesn’t have specialised servers or features dedicated to streaming, such as SmartDNS. Because of that, the user needs to rely solely on the VPN connection, which can be better or worse depending on the server location. And the number of the servers is not very optimal for streaming, with just around 700 servers in 70 countries.
On a brighter note, VyprVPN works with some streaming devices and smart tvs. For others, you’ll have to set the VPN up on your router.
NordVPN is also widely known as the best one for unblocking geo-restricted content on just about any streaming platform. And while these capabilities may sound like something out of a fairytale, they are true.
NordVPN has a feature called SmartPlay which allows for an absolutely smooth and seamless streaming experience. You don’t need to change servers when looking for a better connection. One can also set up NordVPN on various streaming devices and smart TVs, and it is compatible with a number of routers.
Torrenting
This is the one category where NordVPN should take the cake and the throne without any discussion whatsoever. Don’t get me wrong - VyprVPN also supports P2P traffic and allows you to torrent files. It just doesn’t reach the level of NordVPN.
VyprVPN is known for its previous restrictions surrounding torrenting. Users could even get banned if caught downloading torrent files using VyprVPN’s servers. And while this is no longer true, some limits still are in effect.
For example, the speed is limited to just 5MB/s (or 40Mbps) when torrenting, regardless of the actual speed of the VPN connection. If you have really fast speeds, you probably won’t notice the change. But for those who have slower internet connection, this can be the make or break factor.
NordVPN, on the other hand, supports torrenting on all of its servers and even has specialised servers for P2P traffic. And these also have additional filters for fastest, nearest and safest servers and locations. NordVPN doesn’t limit download speeds either.

VyprVPN, among the standard protocols discussed in the speed and performance section, has an additional protocol called Chameleon 2.0. It is an obfuscated version of the OpenVPN protocol, designed specifically for masking the usage of a VPN from DPI (Deep Packet Inspection), therefore is great in places where using a VPN is illegal.
NordVPN’s selection of exclusive features is pretty extensive. There are specialised servers, such as the obfuscated, P2P and Onion over VPN. The SmartPlay feature for streaming all kinds of content, a combination of a VPN and SmartDNS, is implemented and automatically activated in all of NordVPN's subscriptions.
Presets is another great feature of NordVPN for the more experienced users, or those who simply want to curate a VPN connection by themselves. This feature allows for extensive customization, such as building your preferred VPN network, adding shortcuts to apps, toggling filters and other settings.
NordVPN vs VyprVPN: which is more secure?
A VPN’s primary function is to secure your internet connection and encrypt your traffic so it’s not visible to anyone else but you. Therefore, looking closely at how a VPN provider performs in this field is very important.
Both of these VPNs apply the latest encryption technologies, meaning the AES-256-CBC data encryption. As for authentication, VyprVPN uses the SHA256 hash, while NordVPN takes it a step further with SHA512 hash.
But encryption and authentication processing is not everything, and in other areas of ensuring security and privacy, NordVPN is a little bit better than VyprVPN.
Infrastructure
The infrastructure of a VPN provider mainly relates to the state of their servers and whether or how data is stored on them. It has been established that RAM-only servers is the best way to go here, as all data is stored only in server memory that gets wiped out with each restart.
VyprVPN, unfortunately, does not have RAM-only servers. Instead, they promise that all data stored in servers’ hard drives is encrypted, and if anyone tries to access them with their own physical hands, everyone and their mother will be notified of such breaches. While this is not as good as RAM-only servers, it isn’t as bad as it could be.
To add some security points to VyprVPN’s infrastructure, it is worth mentioning that its servers are colocated - this means that VyprVPN owns and maintains them, as well as manages their network. This reduces the risk of third-party breaches, as no one else but VyprVPN has access to the servers and data stored on them.
On the other hand, NordVPN has upgraded most of their servers to being colocated and RAM-only. Users’ data is protected in every way possible, which earns NordVPN more security points than VyprVPN.
Privacy
Both NordVPN and VyprVPN are registered in countries where it’s not required to log, collect, or provide users’ data in any case whatsoever. Both Panama, where NordVPN is based, and Switzerland, the home country of VyprVPN, don’t belong to any intelligence sharing alliances, such as the Five Eyes Alliance or similar.
Logging
Logging is one of the most widely discussed parts of any VPN, and VyprVPN together with NordVPN are no exceptions.
Lucky for us (or for them), both of these VPN providers employ very strict and independently audited no-logs policies.
VyprVPN states in their privacy policy, that "VyprVPN is a zero log VPN Service. We do not record or retain any data when you use the VyprVPN Service." This VPN provider also walks the talk - it has been independently audited, and the related legal documentation is accessible to users that may be interested in it. The only data that may be stored is about the state of the servers and is not in any way related to users’ identities.
NordVPN is just the same. It has been audited independently 6 times, and its privacy policy clearly states that no information is logged. Only crash error reports and diagnostics that in no way lead to a specific user may be recorded, but individual users can always opt out of that.

VyprVPN doesn’t have a graphical Linux interface, but that is not surprising, as few VPN providers do. VyprVPN for Linux operates on terminal, and is available only for Ubuntu and Mint distributions. On top of that, WireGuard is not available on the VyprVPN Linux client.
NordVPN’s desktop apps for Windows and Mac also don’t differ much. They’re light, can be as big or small as you want them, and in addition to the server list, there is a visually pleasing, interactive world map with servers to choose from. It is very easy to find customization options, various settings and specialised servers. Besides, there are little pine trees on the map, which just adds to the charm.
NordVPN has launched its graphical user interface for Linux, so there’s no need to use a command line anymore. NordVPN is compatible with virtually every Linux distribution, which is more than what VyprVPN has to offer. Besides, the terminal commands are simple and very easy to remember.
Mobile apps
NordVPN’s mobile apps have similar interfaces to the desktop clients. The interactive map and side menu is present, although it’s sometimes difficult to find where exactly some of the settings are.
The differences between iOS and Android apps are in the features. For example, only the Android app has split tunneling, Call Protection to catch spam calls, and a Smart Troubleshooting Wizard for easy VPN repair and diagnostics. However, both these apps are perfectly functional and do their job well.
VyprVPN’s mobile apps have a nice and easy to navigate interface, though there’s nothing extraordinary. There are some major differences between the features, though. The iOS app, for example, does not have split-tunneling nor a kill switch.
The Android version, on the other hand, is even better than the desktop apps. You can choose a different DNS provider and sync the VPN connection with the restart of your device. WireGuard is available on both iOS and Android VyprVPN clients.
