Key differences between NordVPN and VyprVPN

On the surface, NordVPN and VyprVPN look like they're solving the same problem. That said, when you look deeper, they're actually built for entirely different users.

Choose NordVPN if:

  • You want a massive server network. With 9,500+ servers in 149 countries, NordVPN offers unmatched location variety for streaming and bypassing geo-restrictions.
  • Speed matters most. Its NordLynx protocol delivers some of the fastest speeds available, ideal for streaming, gaming, and large downloads.
  • You want extra features. Double VPN, Threat Protection, ad blocking, and a beginner-friendly app make it a well-rounded, high-value package.

For a full analysis, head over to our NordVPN review.

Choose VyprVPN if:

  • You're in a censored region. Its proprietary Chameleon protocol defeats deep packet inspection, making it one of the best VPNs for countries like China or Russia.
  • Infrastructure ownership matters. VyprVPN owns 100% of its servers and network, eliminating third-party data exposure risks.
  • You're on a budget. VyprVPN's plans are consistently cheaper than NordVPN's across all billing cycles, making it the better pick if you want solid VPN protection without overspending.

Speed performance: NordVPN vs VyprVPN

The speed performance of any VPN is determined by testing it in several different locations and then comparing the results to the baseline speed. However, it would be a very long read if we were to do it that way here. Thus, in this NordVPN vs VyprVPN comparison, we will take the average speeds of both VPNs connected to different server locations and compare them to each other.

It is also worth noting that VPN speed depends on the proximity to the server, baseline speed, and traffic load, so the results may vary from test to test.

Data period: 06.13 - 06.27
Download retention
US (NY) US (NY)
88% (823Mbit/s) 6% (64Mbit/s)
United Kingdom United Kingdom
91% (853Mbit/s) 2% (27Mbit/s)
Upload retention
US (NY) US (NY)
74% (695Mbit/s) 12% (120Mbit/s)
United Kingdom United Kingdom
95% (892Mbit/s) 11% (112Mbit/s)
Download/Upload baseline speed - 500 Mbit/s

Seeing these two-week results, it's clear that NordVPN, using its proprietary NordLynx protocol is faster than VyprVPN with the WireGuard. In fact, VyprVPN performs poorly compared to the other top VPNs on the market and we can only hope that it's technical issues instead of regular VyprVPN performance.

Wrapping up
All speeds considered, NordVPN is faster than VyprVPN, even with regards to the VyprVPN's WireGuard implementation.

Netflix and streaming performance

Both NordVPN and VyprVPN are really good VPNs for streaming Netflix and other streaming platforms. But one of them is still better equipped than the other for this, and that would be NordVPN. Let’s see why.

First, let’s talk about VyprVPN. During our tests, it was evident that VyprVPN doesn’t struggle much when it comes to streaming. It managed to unblock all of the streaming platforms that we tested it on. However, the IKEv2 protocol had a little trouble with Netflix, but as the WireGuard protocol performed fine, we can get behind that.

Watching Netflix with NordVPN

Nevertheless, it is worth mentioning that VyprVPN doesn’t have specialised servers or features dedicated to streaming, such as SmartDNS. Because of that, the user needs to rely solely on the VPN connection, which can be better or worse depending on the server location. And the number of the servers is not very optimal for streaming, with just around 700 servers in 70 countries.

On a brighter note, VyprVPN works with some streaming devices and smart tvs. For others, you’ll have to set the VPN up on your router.

NordVPN is also widely known as the best one for unblocking geo-restricted content on just about any streaming platform. And while these capabilities may sound like something out of a fairytale, they are true.

NordVPN has a feature called SmartPlay which allows for an absolutely smooth and seamless streaming experience. You don’t need to change servers when looking for a better connection. One can also set up NordVPN on various streaming devices and smart TVs, and it is compatible with a number of routers.

Wrapping up
9,500 servers in 149 countries for accessing countless streaming libraries, special features for streaming and the ability to unblock even the most stubborn streaming platforms make NordVPN the absolute winner of this category.

Torrenting

This is the one category where NordVPN should take the cake and the throne without any discussion whatsoever. Don’t get me wrong - VyprVPN also supports P2P traffic and allows you to torrent files. It just doesn’t reach the level of NordVPN.

VyprVPN is known for its previous restrictions surrounding torrenting. Users could even get banned if caught downloading torrent files using VyprVPN’s servers. And while this is no longer true, some limits still are in effect.

For example, the speed is limited to just 5MB/s (or 40Mbps) when torrenting, regardless of the actual speed of the VPN connection. If you have really fast speeds, you probably won’t notice the change. But for those who have slower internet connection, this can be the make or break factor.

NordVPN, on the other hand, supports torrenting on all of its servers and even has specialised servers for P2P traffic. And these also have additional filters for fastest, nearest and safest servers and locations. NordVPN doesn’t limit download speeds either.

Wrapping up
NordVPN is the clear winner for torrenting. It supports P2P on all servers, offers specialized torrenting options, and doesn’t cap speeds, while VyprVPN still applies limitations that can affect performance.

Plans and pricing

The pricing of NordVPN and VyprVPN is pretty straightforward and simple. The price per month decreases as the subscription plan length increases, meaning you’ll pay more for one month with the monthly plan than with the 1-year or 2-year plan. Let’s take a look at NordVPN and VyprVPN plans and pricing.

Subscription planNordVPNVyprVPN
1 month plan$14.99
$10.00
1-year plan$5.49/month$5.00/month
2-year plan$3.49/month$3.00/month

First thing to notice is that VyprVPN is more affordable across all plan durations. Its monthly plan stands out most – priced at $5.00/month, it's one of the cheapest in the industry.

It’s also good to keep in mind that NordVPN offers multiple subscription tiers that can quickly drive up the cost. VyprVPN keeps it simple with a single tier, meaning you get every feature the service has to offer.

Wrapping up
VyprVPN is the winner in pricing thanks to its lower costs across all plans and a simpler subscription model that includes all features.

Server locations

Server and location count is something that every VPN ever wants to boast about, constantly. The more servers a VPN has, the better it is - a high number of servers in a variety of locations is important for streaming and obfuscation purposes. Let’s see how NordVPN and VyprVPN compare to each other in this category.

NordVPN has 9,500 servers in 149 countries, which is truly a very high number - few VPNs have more servers than this provider. VyprVPN, on the other hand, has only 700 servers, which, compared to NordVPN, is not a lot. However, VyprVPN is spread out in 70 countries, which may be better for unblocking location specific content. But smaller server fleet may also mean higher loads, which in turn can slow down your VPN connection even more.

Wrapping up
All in all, NordVPN has more servers than VyprVPN, therefore it wins this category.

Features overview

Additional features are what make or break a VPN provider. Any VPN that performs its basic functions well is a good VPN, but a VPN that has everything you need, and everything you didn’t know you need, is better.

Out of the two VPNs, NordVPN is better equipped in this particular comparison category. It has more exclusive features, such as SmartPlay and specialty servers, and overall performs better when it comes to keeping you safe and your information private.

Wrapping up
NordVPN is the winner thanks to its broader set of additional features, including SmartPlay, specialty servers, and stronger web protection tools, while VyprVPN offers fewer capabilities and more limited functionality overall.

Web filters

Both VyprVPN and NordVPN offer web filters for protection against malware, adware, and insecure websites that could potentially expose your data and devices to cyber threats. Let’s take a closer look at each provider to see what they offer and how they compare to each other.

VyprVPN feature to block malicious sites
VyprVPN feature to block malicious sites

VyprVPN has a malicious site block which is just what it says on the tin. This feature, when turned on, denies access to malicious websites that are listed on its malware domain blacklist. However, in case of an unlisted but malicious website, the VPN gives the user the option to proceed, leaving you to basically fend for yourself. In addition, this feature is only available on macOS.

Threat Protection Pro feature

NordVPN, on the other hand, has a feature called Threat Protection that is everything you need in one place. It blocks malicious websites, adware, and ad trackers, and notifies you about potential cyber threats. NordVPN is able to offer real-time protection by constantly cross-referencing and updating its blacklisted domains list. To add to that, there is also a Dark Web Monitor that scours the dark web for your exposed private information, such as credit card details, Social Security numbers, passwords, phone numbers, and national IDs.

Exclusive features

Exclusive features are what make a VPN unique in some way or another. NordVPN and VyprVPN also have such features. They are very different from each other but still pretty awesome in their own right.

VyprVPN, among the standard protocols discussed in the speed and performance section, has an additional protocol called Chameleon 2.0. It is an obfuscated version of the OpenVPN protocol, designed specifically for masking the usage of a VPN from DPI (Deep Packet Inspection), therefore is great in places where using a VPN is illegal.

VyprVPN Chameleon protocol

NordVPN’s selection of exclusive features is pretty extensive. There are specialised servers, such as the obfuscated, P2P and Onion over VPN. The SmartPlay feature for streaming all kinds of content, a combination of a VPN and SmartDNS, is implemented and automatically activated in all of NordVPN's subscriptions.

Presets is another great feature of NordVPN for the more experienced users, or those who simply want to curate a VPN connection by themselves. This feature allows for extensive customization, such as building your preferred VPN network, adding shortcuts to apps, toggling filters and other settings.

NordVPN vs VyprVPN: which is more secure?

A VPN’s primary function is to secure your internet connection and encrypt your traffic so it’s not visible to anyone else but you. Therefore, looking closely at how a VPN provider performs in this field is very important.

Both of these VPNs apply the latest encryption technologies, meaning the AES-256-CBC data encryption. As for authentication, VyprVPN uses the SHA256 hash, while NordVPN takes it a step further with SHA512 hash.

But encryption and authentication processing is not everything, and in other areas of ensuring security and privacy, NordVPN is a little bit better than VyprVPN.

Wrapping up
NordVPN is the winner thanks to its stronger overall security infrastructure, including RAM-only servers and higher authentication standards, giving it a slight edge over VyprVPN despite both providers maintaining strict no-logs policies.

Infrastructure

The infrastructure of a VPN provider mainly relates to the state of their servers and whether or how data is stored on them. It has been established that RAM-only servers is the best way to go here, as all data is stored only in server memory that gets wiped out with each restart.

VyprVPN, unfortunately, does not have RAM-only servers. Instead, they promise that all data stored in servers’ hard drives is encrypted, and if anyone tries to access them with their own physical hands, everyone and their mother will be notified of such breaches. While this is not as good as RAM-only servers, it isn’t as bad as it could be.

To add some security points to VyprVPN’s infrastructure, it is worth mentioning that its servers are colocated - this means that VyprVPN owns and maintains them, as well as manages their network. This reduces the risk of third-party breaches, as no one else but VyprVPN has access to the servers and data stored on them.

On the other hand, NordVPN has upgraded most of their servers to being colocated and RAM-only. Users’ data is protected in every way possible, which earns NordVPN more security points than VyprVPN.

Privacy

Both NordVPN and VyprVPN are registered in countries where it’s not required to log, collect, or provide users’ data in any case whatsoever. Both Panama, where NordVPN is based, and Switzerland, the home country of VyprVPN, don’t belong to any intelligence sharing alliances, such as the Five Eyes Alliance or similar.

Logging

Logging is one of the most widely discussed parts of any VPN, and VyprVPN together with NordVPN are no exceptions.

Lucky for us (or for them), both of these VPN providers employ very strict and independently audited no-logs policies.

VyprVPN states in their privacy policy, that "VyprVPN is a zero log VPN Service. We do not record or retain any data when you use the VyprVPN Service." This VPN provider also walks the talk - it has been independently audited, and the related legal documentation is accessible to users that may be interested in it. The only data that may be stored is about the state of the servers and is not in any way related to users’ identities.

NordVPN is just the same. It has been audited independently 6 times, and its privacy policy clearly states that no information is logged. Only crash error reports and diagnostics that in no way lead to a specific user may be recorded, but individual users can always opt out of that.

NordVPN and VyprVPN both have clients for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Linux, as well as a bunch of other devices and routers. However, NordVPN’s list of supported devices and browsers is far more extensive than that of VyprVPN, which ultimately puts NordVPN at an advantage. An interesting thing to notice, though, is that other supported software and devices, apart from routers, don’t overlap.

In terms of simultaneous connections, both providers allow connecting up to 10 devices.

As for the user interface, like with any app, including a VPN, it mostly comes down to personal preferences. However, it also matters universally where the more advanced settings are or how easy it is to set up an obfuscated VPN connection.

Wrapping up
NordVPN is the winner thanks to its broader device and browser support, giving users more flexibility despite both providers offering similar simultaneous connections and comparable usability.

Desktop apps

VyprVPN’s Mac and Windows apps look exactly the same. It’s a small window, as they want to take up as little of your desktop space as possible. It shows the state of your VPN connection and a tab bar at the bottom for easy navigation between customization options, connection settings, and server list. The only difference between the clients is the lack of split tunneling and malware blocking features on Windows.

VyprVPN Windows interface
VyprVPN Windows interface

VyprVPN doesn’t have a graphical Linux interface, but that is not surprising, as few VPN providers do. VyprVPN for Linux operates on terminal, and is available only for Ubuntu and Mint distributions. On top of that, WireGuard is not available on the VyprVPN Linux client.

NordVPN’s desktop apps for Windows and Mac also don’t differ much. They’re light, can be as big or small as you want them, and in addition to the server list, there is a visually pleasing, interactive world map with servers to choose from. It is very easy to find customization options, various settings and specialised servers. Besides, there are little pine trees on the map, which just adds to the charm.

NordVPN Windows interface february 2026
NordVPN Windows interface

NordVPN has launched its graphical user interface for Linux, so there’s no need to use a command line anymore. NordVPN is compatible with virtually every Linux distribution, which is more than what VyprVPN has to offer. Besides, the terminal commands are simple and very easy to remember.

Mobile apps

NordVPN’s mobile apps have similar interfaces to the desktop clients. The interactive map and side menu is present, although it’s sometimes difficult to find where exactly some of the settings are.

nordvpn mobile replacement
NordVPN app interface

The differences between iOS and Android apps are in the features. For example, only the Android app has split tunneling, Call Protection to catch spam calls, and a Smart Troubleshooting Wizard for easy VPN repair and diagnostics. However, both these apps are perfectly functional and do their job well.

VyprVPN’s mobile apps have a nice and easy to navigate interface, though there’s nothing extraordinary. There are some major differences between the features, though. The iOS app, for example, does not have split-tunneling nor a kill switch.

VyprVPN Android app interface
VyprVPN Android app interface

The Android version, on the other hand, is even better than the desktop apps. You can choose a different DNS provider and sync the VPN connection with the restart of your device. WireGuard is available on both iOS and Android VyprVPN clients.

Customer support

The last category in our NordVPN vs VyprVPN comparison is customer support - an important part of any VPN service. Let’s see how they compare to each other.

The things that NordVPN and VyprVPN have in common are extensive knowledge bases, filled with all kinds of tutorials on how to set up your VPN on various devices and operating systems. There are also the usual FAQ sections.

Both NordVPN and VyprVPN have 24/7 live chat options. VyprVPN’s customer agents are quick and knowledgeable, and help you find answers and fixes to your problems in no time. NordVPN is just the same - helpful and quick support agents are available via the live chat or email, which can also be used interchangeably.

NordVPN also has a chatbot to help you with the most often occurring issues. VyprVPN, unfortunately, doesn’t have a chatbot, but that doesn’t make their customer support worse than that of NordVPN.

Wrapping up
VyprVPN and NordVPN tie in customer support, as both offer extensive knowledge bases, 24/7 live chat, and responsive agents who resolve issues quickly.

NordVPN vs VyprVPN – which one wins?

Both providers have clear strengths. VyprVPN stands out for affordability and its Chameleon protocol, which helps bypass censorship. However, NordVPN dominates most categories with faster speeds, better streaming performance, stronger security infrastructure, and a far larger server network. It also offers more features like SmartPlay, specialty servers, and Threat Protection.

While both deliver reliable support and solid privacy policies, NordVPN is the overall winner thanks to its superior performance, broader capabilities, and stronger overall value.
