Streaming
If you’re a movie buff, VeePN is a good choice. However, whether you’ll enjoy the service greatly depends on which streaming platforms you want to unblock.
So, let’s start from the good stuff. I managed to unblock Netflix US on the very first try. I also accessed BBC iPlayer with ease and unblocked various geo-restricted YouTube videos from different countries. Also, the speeds were quite good, and there was no annoying buffering.
On the other hand, VeePN didn’t let me access other Netflix libraries (like UK and CA), or well as Hulu.
Platform | Does it work? |
Netflix | ✅ Yes (US library) |
HBO Max | ❌ No |
YouTube TV | ✅ Ye |
BBC iPlayer | ✅ Ye |
Hulu | ❌ No |
You should also keep in mind that VeePN doesn’t offer the SmartDNS feature that allows you to watch geo-blocked content on devices that don’t support VPN connections.
Luckily, you can install the service directly onto your router, which would allow you to watch content on gaming consoles and various Smart TVs. You can find the instructions on the official site of VeePN, but if your Smart TV runs on Android TV, you can simply use the Android app.
Speed
- Base: download speed 82.11 Mbps, upload speed 86.27 Mbps
Location | Download | Upload |
US California | 57.72 | 76.65 |
UK London | 51.34 | 69.74 |
Canada | 58.48 | 46.38 |
Japan | 48.52 | 28.43 |
Germany | 73.11 | 44.40 |
It was nice to discover that VeePN doesn’t slow down your internet connection much. As you can see from the table, the service didn’t make a significant impact on my connection.
On the other hand, I noticed that some pages did load more slowly. Luckily, this didn't influence my streaming – the video played smoothly.
I also like how consistent the speeds are. There are no sharp speed drops, and thus you will usually know what to expect.
However, don’t forget that VPN speeds depend on many factors, including your own internet connection speed. Your connection speed with VeePN will reflect what those factors are for you.
For example, I used the WireGuard tunneling protocol, which is considered the fastest one of the currently available protocols. This means I would probably get worse results with protocols like OpenVPN or IKEv2.
Security
You shouldn’t worry about security when using VeePN. For one, it uses military-grade AES-256 encryption, which is the security standard for Virtual Private Networks. In addition to this, VeePN offers a kill switch and DNS leak protection, which makes it a really secure VPN.
When it comes to tunneling protocols, you have a pretty good selection:
- OpenVPN TCP/UDP
- IKEv2
- Shadowsocks
- WireGuard
If you want the best speeds possible, I suggest you pick WireGuard, as it’s considered to be the fastest protocol nowadays. However, OpenVPN and IKEv2 are also decent choices when it comes to speed and security.
Meanwhile, Shadowsocks might be of great help when you try to connect from countries that block VPN traffic and have a high level of internet censorship.
It’s also worth mentioning that VeePN is Based in Panama, a privacy-friendly country with no data retention laws.
Features
Although VeePN isn’t one of the most feature-rich VPNs, there’s still a lot to discover.
For example, one of the more interesting features is Double VPN. It will make your connection go through two servers, which means that your data gets encrypted twice. This adds an extra layer of security, making your browsing even more private.
In addition, VeePN blocks ads, malicious websites, and online trackers. However, it’s not done by default - you have to activate these features on the dashboard. On the other hand, I wouldn’t trust any VPN to block all online threats. For that, you should get a reputable antivirus application with real-time protection.
The VPN also lets you use custom DNS. To activate the feature, you have to enter your preferred DNS server, as well as an alternate DNS server.
Lastly, you can set the VPN to connect automatically as soon as you turn on your computer. Just don’t forget to choose your preferred server.
Pricing
Subscription | Price |
1 month | $10.99 |
1 year | $5.83 |
5 years | $1.67 |
I’m glad to tell you that VeePN can be a pretty cheap service, as you can pay as little as $1.67 a month. That’s much less than what you’d have to pay for many other VPNs on the market.
However, keep in mind that this price requires you to stick with them for a whole 5 years, which is a pretty long period of time.
In case you’d like to try a shorter subscription period, you can go for a 1-year plan for $5.83 a month. Alternatively, there’s a single-month subscription for $10.99. As it’s significantly pricier, I’d recommend it only if you want to try out the service before going for a longer subscription period.
What’s also cool about VeePN is the fact that it offers 10 simultaneous connections and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Applications
VeePN is pretty versatile – it offers lots of different apps for all kinds of devices.
For example, it has dedicated applications for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Linux. It doesn’t end here either. You can also install a VeePN browser extension onto the following browsers: Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Opera.
When it comes to less common apps, VeePN doesn’t disappoint either: you can use it on Android TV and Fire TV as well.
Customer support
VeePN has a pretty strong selection of customer support methods. Firstly, it offers a Troubleshooting section full of articles on various problems, as well as some useful info on VPNs in general.
Then, there’s the option to send an email to [email protected] or simply fill in a support ticket form on their website.
Finally, I saved the best for last - there’s also a live chat that will allow you to get an answer in minutes. To test it out, I reached out to a customer support specialist and got a reply pretty quickly.
Conclusion
It’s a shame that VeePN is one of the less popular VPN services on the market, as it actually has a lot to offer. Luckily, online security is not a popularity contest, and that’s why we gave VeePN a chance to prove itself.
And it did. For example, I was happy to find out that this VPN does a decent job at unblocking streaming sites. I also like the wide selection of apps and solid security cred. And even though it doesn’t have a lot of features, the ones it offers are pretty good.
With some improvements here and here, I can see how VeePN might become more and more popular as time goes by.
