Atlantic.Net review: should it be your next scaling partner?

Atlantic.Net is not a name I hear very often, but it’s suitable for large businesses and enterprises. The prices are decent, the resources are vast, and you’re free to configure your server as you see fit. Atlantic.Net also delivers excellent performance.

Atlantic.Net has been around for quite some time. People know about it mainly because it comes with HIPAA-compliant hosting services. It’s that one thing that defines it.

While I was expecting astronomical prices, they seemed ok at first glance, so I was curious if the services were any good. I couldn’t possibly complain about the resources. When a provider offers up to 192GB of RAM and almost 4TB of storage… There’s hardly any reason to complain. However, I did notice some downsides too, such as a lack of ease of use, particularly for beginners.

Best Atlantic.Net alternative
Bluehost makes a great Atlantic.Net alternative. It's inexpensive and easy to use, making it an ideal candidate for those who are just starting out with web hosting or are less tech-savvy.

Of course, that’s not all that matters, so I decided to take it up with Atlantic.Net review strategically. I checked out the prices and the plans, moved up to ease of use and performance, and then finished with security and customer support. I was a girl with a plan. This article is what came out the other side.

You can go right down to the end for the conclusion if you don’t want to read my mumbling for the following 2000 words or so. I won’t judge.

Atlantic.Net pricing and plans

Atlantic.Net provides cloud VPS, with the cheapest plan retailing just for $4.00/mo. The resources start at 2GB of RAM, 1 vCPU, 50GB of SSD storage, and 3TB transfer. As for other hosting options, there are dedicated servers, with prices starting at $233.00/mo. The cheapest dedicated plan includes 64GB of RAM, 12 vCPUs, and 400GB of SSD storage.

Type of hostingBest for
Cloud VPS hostingBusinesses that need scaling.
Dedicated hostingLarge enterprises that need vast resources for multiple projects.

Most people who make the jump from shared hosting opt for VPS services, so I’ll focus on that. Atlantic.Net offers 11 cloud VPS plans. The resources range from 2 to 192GB of RAM, 1 to 32 vCPUs, 50 to 3840GB of SSD storage, and 3 to 13TB transfer. As for prices, they range from $4.00/mo to $816.00/mo for annual plans.

Apart from the resources mentioned above, Atlantic.Net offers plenty:

  • Easy scalability
  • Daily backup (additional charges may apply)
  • RAID-10 VPS storage – for proper functioning even when components don’t behave properly
  • One IPv4 address (you can buy more)
  • Guaranteed CPU cycles
  • cPanel and WHM
  • VPS hosting snapshots
Best value

To snatch the best prices, opt for the 36-month billing cycle. If you’re looking to run a smaller site or simplistic project, the G3.1GB plan that retails for $4.00/mo will be more than enough.

All plans are available for both Linux and Windows. However, the latter is pricier.

I won’t go into too much detail about all the other pricing aspects, but you should know that Atlantic.Net does this pay-as-you-go thing, so there isn’t a money-back policy in place.

The lowest prices apply to annual subscriptions, with 36-month subscriptions being a bit cheaper ($4.00/month for the most affordable plan) and monthly subscriptions more expensive. Hourly payments are available as well.

The bottom line is that Atlantic.Net offers quite a lot in terms of resources. Not a lot of providers can give you up to 192GB of RAM. Or 3840GB of SSD storage, for that matter. Cloud VPS can be affordable, but dedicated servers cost quite a bit. Even so, this provider has the necessary infrastructure to take your project to the next level.

Hosting management: is it easy to use?

Atlantic.Net's ease of use depends on whether you go for unmanaged or managed services. Right from the get-go, the provider gives you full root access to the server so that you configure it however you like. Even so, it’s not complicated for a seasoned user.

In terms of management, the control panel is the one that makes a difference, and Atlantic.Net’s is not so hard to navigate. You have several categories for servers, snapshots, block storage, DNS, IPs, and of course, account info on the left-side menu. From there, you can access everything you need to manage your server(s).

Atlantic.net user interface

If you want to add a new server, the process is pretty straightforward. In the main control panel, click on the button that says +Add Server. Give it a name, choose the operating system, and pick a data center so that the server is closest to your target audience. And voila!

Now, if you want to reboot your server for maintenance purposes, you can do so from your control panel. You can even choose between a soft and a hard reboot. I hardly ever had to do a hard reboot, but it’s good to know you have that option. Worst case scenario, you know?

Next on, we have server backups. I always try just to make sure that my data is all safe and sound. So, when you add a server from your control panel, you have to enable daily backups. You’ll get this window on your screen.

I guess all the rest is pretty much self-explanatory. You choose the option that suits you best and hit the Submit button. The rest is history. Get it? Documented history?

Moving away from my half-funny jokes, I also wanted to see what the app installation was like. Pretty easy, I have to say. When you configure your server and choose an operating system, you go to the Applications tab. You get access to all sorts of one-click installs, such as WordPress, Lamp, Nextcloud, cPanel, and a few others.

Atlantic.net one click installations

This is pretty much it. Well, some of it because things are a bit more extensive than that. Even so, I think you get it. Of course, if you cannot handle Atlantic.Net’s management system, you can always opt for service management. That will cost you, and you have to contact the provider’s sales department to inquire about the prices.

All in all, if you’re not a sweet summer child when it comes to VPS hosting, you’ll find Atlantic.Net easy to use. If not, service management is available. Besides, there are enough resources, both on Google and within the provider’s knowledge base, that will tell you what’s what.

Performance: is Atlantic.Net fast?

One of the most important aspects when deciding which provider to use is performance. In this department, Atlantic.Net did not disappoint. It came with a 100% uptime guarantee, and that’s exactly what it gave me. Plus, the average response time of 452ms was on point.

Atlantic.net uptime and response time

Sure, there was that one spike of 1.1 seconds, but it was an isolated event. For the most part, the response time was constant. And that’s what you want – consistency.

Apart from excellent results, know that Atlantic.Net has multiple data centers. Seven (7), to be more specific. Five of them are in the US, one is in the UK, and the last one is in Canada. Moreover, you can choose which data center to use when you add a new server to your account.

The bottom line is that Atlantic.Net’s performance is not to be questioned. The uptime was 100%, as promised, the response time was low, and the fact that you can choose a data center ensures that your target audience will always enjoy fast-loading pages.

Security: is Atlantic.Net secure?

Atlantic.Net is a HIPAA-compliant hosting provider, so that says something. Other than that, Atlantic.Net offers SSL certificates, backups, DDoS protection, firewalls, malware scanning, and so on. Obviously, it takes security seriously.

The fact that you get SSL certificates is nothing out of the ordinary. Even a cheap shared hosting provider gives you that. Think Bluehost. However, not many providers are HIPAA compliant. Atlantic.Net is, and it’s ready to protect your sensitive information with everything it has.

Other than the SSL certificates and the HIPAA-compliant features, Atlantic.Net provides the following:

  • Fully-managed firewalls – Atlantic.Net’s firewall tracks and stores historical network activity. As a result, all servers are monitored, and the gathered data is reported back for improved network performance and health. I couldn’t possibly test that out, so I’ll take the provider’s word for it.
  • HIPAA Intrusion Prevention System is basically a database of malware and other potential dangers, and it’s constantly revised. That way, Atlantic.Net’s security infrastructure can be customized depending on your specific needs. Plus, all threats are monitored in real-time.
  • Backups – what is the point of having a secure provider if you cannot restore your data when necessary? All plans come with daily backups, and you can even purchase more space for even more data backup.

Overall, Atlantic.Net is among the few HIPAA-compliant hosting providers, which makes it incredibly safe. No worries in this department whatsoever.

Will Atlantic.Net’s support help me?

Atlantic.Net offers 2 support channels: email and phone. Both of them are available 24/7, and there is a phone number for international calls as well. Moreover, the provider offers access to an extensive knowledge base via a blog and a tutorial page.

So, even if you don’t have a lot of experience in using a cloud platform, Atlantic.Net gives you the know-how about pretty much everything.

I decided to give Atlantic.Net’s customer support a shot, so I emailed them. I was primarily interested in the response time because the lack of a live chat option always makes me wonder. Will I get a reply in a few minutes or a few hours? It’s not pleasant to need an answer fast and not get it.

Atlantic.net support chat

The good news is that it took 6 minutes to get a response to my email. The support agent answered my question and even gave me an email address to ask more questions and get more detailed responses to my inquiry.

So yes. Atlantic.Net’s support will help you when necessary. With multiple support channels and an extensive knowledge base, you should get all the assistance you need.
