Apple removes one feature of its AirPods Pro 3 for the European market

Apple decided to incorporate some feature changes into its AirPods Pro 3, leaving the European Commission confused.
While many were waiting for the launch of the iPhone 17 series, Apple also introduced its latest wearables and accessories, including new AirPods.
During Apple’s “Awe Dropping” event, the company revealed its new AirPods Pro 3. While the earbuds already boast of being a hearing aid and hearing protection device, they also come with a new feature – live translation.
With this feature, users can understand others in their preferred language. The feature interprets individual words and phrases, and also lowers the other person’s voice while they talk so that the user can hear the translation better.
However, not all users will be able to enjoy the feature, according to Apple Support.
“Live Translation with AirPods is not available if you are in the EU and your Apple Account Country or Region is also in the EU,” notes the page on how to get Apple Intelligence.
One requirement for live translation to work on the new AirPods is that they be paired with an iPhone that includes Apple’s AI.
While Apple Intelligence is already available in Europe, the company is disabling this feature because of how it understands the obligations set by the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, reports Politico.
According to one of the act’s decisions, the company has to make some features compatible with competitor devices.
The decision surprised the European Commission because it didn’t interfere with the launch of the new feature, with the company accepting this decision on its own.
The feature supports live translation via AirPods for English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. In the future, it should also add Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.
