Apple’s first foldable may have its biggest-ever battery

A small battery is what experts cite as one of the reasons that caused iPhone 17 Air sales to flop. Can it be that the tech has learnt its lesson?

Key takeaways:

It all started in 2017 – the year when the first reports of possible Apple foldable phones reaching the market began emerging. So far, they haven’t come true, but the hopes for iPhone 18 lineup are high.

However, this time, it’s not only the possible release of a foldable iPhone that’s fueling expectations, but the biggest- ever battery.

A known leaker Fixed Focus Digital that the new foldable phone could come with a battery that’s over 5,500 mAh in size. It’s a record high size compared to predating iPhones. For instance, so far the iPhone 17 Pro Max holds the biggest iPhone battery in history - 5,088 mAh.

As per MacRumours, other foldable phones on the market have smaller capacity. Take The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold with a 5,015 mAh battery. In the meantime, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 comes with a 4,400 mAh battery.

Another leaker "yeux1122" has previously reported that Apple is refocusing from slimming their designs to improving their power efficiency. Battery life has reportedly become the company’s key focus.

No wonder! Cybernews has previously reported that Apple’s slim iPhone Air falls flat with key buyers in the US and China. Experts continue to criticise Apple for concentrating on design goals rather than thinking through the most practical aspects of owning a phone.

“What's the value of a big thin iPhone? Non-tech people are seeing a device with a single camera lens, worse battery life, and a higher price tag. Additionally, it doesn't help that it launched at a time when most people are cutting spending or already stretched thin,” said Max McCaskill, tech and phone expert at WhistleOut.com, a phone and internet plan comparison company.

Although the foldable iPhone is highly anticipated, its design and battery size aren’t the only features that made it onto leaker’s accounts.

The foldable is said to come with a 7.8-inch crease-free inner display that’s the size of the screen a user sees when the phone is fully unfolded. Once unfolded completely, it is rumoured to present a 5.5-inch cover display.

A blast from the past should be the touch ID. The last time it reached the market via iPhones was in 2022 with the release of the iPhone SE. It's since been retired.

Lastly it’s the chip and the modem. The corners of the internet pass on whispers that the foldable iPhone might have the A20 chip. It’s expected to enhance phone’s features such as speed, lower latency, help thermal efficiency, and make more space available on the phone.
