Android gets a Gemini upgrade, Google announces Googlebooks

Google has revealed new Android features and a replacement for its Chromebooks.

The company shared during the Android Show: I/O Edition 2026, that the new AI-powered upgrades will roll out gradually this summer and will also be implemented on older Samsung and Pixel smartphones.

The features will be available across different Android devices, such as watches, glasses, laptops, and cars.

Google Intelligence features for Android

Gemini Intelligence will focus on automating already existing apps. It will help with shopping by creating a grocery list ready for delivery, booking classes, or ordering takeout.

This automation will also include a feature that saves users from needing to jump from app to app. For example, it can take a list from the notes app and turn it into a grocery list in a shopping cart, ready for delivery.

Nevertheless, the company notes that “Gemini only acts on your command and stops the moment the task is complete. All that's left for you is the final confirmation.”

Google is also adding Gemini-powered automation features to its browser. Users will be able to use AI to autofill “even more of those tiny text fields” across different apps and Google Chrome.

The company is also introducing Rambler, a feature that removes repetitive and filler words when converting speech to text.

With Gemini Intelligence, users will also be able to make more tailored changes.

One such feature is Create My Widgets, which creates custom boards that display information relevant to the user. The widget can display a temperature, a marathon countdown, or healthy recipes.

Other updates coming to Android

The company also introduced a tool that should help with doomscrolling. Pause Point sends the user a notification asking, “Why am I here?”

During this time, the user can either do a breathing exercise, set a timer for scrolling, or open another app that is perhaps more useful.

“Pause Point ensures you stop and think before disabling the feature too, by requiring a phone restart to turn it off,” notes Google.

Google will also expand its Quick Share feature, which allows users to share files with Apple users. The feature will be available not only on Pixel devices but also on Samsung, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor devices, reports The Guardian.
