Sony agrees to $7.8M PlayStation Store settlement – can you claim compensation?

The lawsuit isn’t finalized yet, but users can already check if they’re eligible for a payout from Sony.

PlayStation owners in the US may receive compensation from Japanese gaming console maker Sony as part of a $7.85 million class action lawsuit.

Users who bought games via the PlayStation Store that were previously available through a game-specific voucher, during the period from April 1st, 2019, to December 31st, 2023, may be eligible for the payout.

Another requirement for the payment is that the voucher should have been sold at retail, with at least 200 units purchased before April 2019, notes PushSquare.

It also should show that the game’s price increased by at least $0.50 after the vouchers were withdrawn.

Users who are unsure whether they’re eligible for the payout can check the game list.

Among the affected games are God of War 3 Remastered and The Last of Us Remastered.

In the lawsuit, Sony was accused of “unlawfully eliminating competition and monopolizing the market for Sony digital games, causing consumers to pay more for certain digital games than they otherwise would have paid on the PlayStation Store,” reports PR Newswire.

While the court has not yet determined whether the company was wrong, it suggested a $7,850,000 settlement between the company and the plaintiffs.

Users who are not sure how to proceed further are advised to do nothing if they don’t want to be excluded from the settlement.

Those who would like to exclude themselves from it can do so by providing a written request by July 2nd, 2026. This also means that they will not be entitled to the payout.

The company has recently been questioned by its customers for other shortcomings.

This year, Sony sparked a debate by announcing it would raise the prices of its current gaming consoles.

The price hike has affected customers worldwide, including those who planned to purchase the PS5, PS5 Pro, or PlayStation Portal remote player.

While the company stated it was done to keep providing users with high-quality experiences, many people weren’t satisfied, since they would have bought a gaming console released a while ago for a much higher price.

Recently, Sony has also sparked discontent after users noticed that to keep their games active, they need to complete an online check-in every 30 days.

The change affected those who updated their PS4 and PS5 consoles.

At first, users thought that this could be a bug. However, the company later confirmed that “a one-time online check is required to confirm the game's license, after which no further check-ins are required.”
